Brittany Lewis already accomplished a great deal before being named Miss Delaware.
She was a graduate of Temple University and had her Masters from Willmington. In addition, she taught 7th grade at Prestige Academy Charter School for Boys for 2 years. And even though she had a lot going for her – Brittany was drawn to the Miss America system because of her platform.
Brittany’s older sister was shot and killed outside her apartment in 2010 after a domestic dispute. As a contestant, Brittany was looking for a national stage in order to promote her platform of Domestic Violence Awareness.
Not only did she receive that opportunity by being named Miss Delaware, Brittany received second place in the Quality of Life Awards at Miss America – and received a $4000 scholarship for her efforts.
In an article at Delaware.Newszap.com, Brittany said,
“Women between the ages of 20 and 24 are most at risk to be a victim of domestic violence. So I want young women to understand what a healthy relationship is and how to recognize the warning signs, because the key is to stop domestic violence before it even happens. We need to be proactive, not reactive,” she said.
Big Kudos to Brittany for making such a strong impact this year – and for recognizing the opportunity Miss America provides for elevated awareness of such significant issues. Junkies believe your sister would be proud. 🙂
