$70,000 (Not a typo).
That’s right, April Nelson earned $70,000 through competing in Pageants. Not “in kind” stuff… Actual, legit, scholarships through some incredible pageant programs who reward the kind of hard work and awesomeness that people like April have to offer.
April started as Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen in 2009. Then, she went to her dream school, Oklahoma City University, and competed at Miss Oklahoma for a couple of years (even being named Miss OCU with a significant scholarship attached), before returning to her home state and winning the Miss Louisiana crown.
At Miss America, April earned a Non-finalst talent award and a 3rd Runner Up finish – giving her $17,000 of her $70,000. But in addition to the scholarships, what’s one thing she’s really excited about?
She’s going to be in the Hall of Hair.
Yes – At Oklahoma City University, they’re known for their pageant queens. So much so, that beyond the “Hall of Hair” – there’s a statue in honor of Jane Jayroe, Susan Powell and Shawntel Smith, who were all OCU students. And although April won’t be cast in bronze on campus, the Hall of Hair (aka – Hall of Fame) is still a pretty great honor 🙂
To be fair, April is pretty awesome (and not fixated upon being in the ‘hall of hair’) – I really just wanted Junkies to know about the OCU story (#truth). Therefore, if you’d like to hear all about April’s incredible platform and her secret to winning the Miss Louisiana title, catch her podcast right here…
