Junkies Predict Miss Indiana 2016

One of Morgan Jackson’s judges at the Miss Indiana pageant was Dave O’Brien.  When he’s not busy judging pageants, Dave is a radio host on Country 97.1 Hank FM.  And after Morgan won the title, Dave invited her to be on the air with him… (it’s a fun interview – catch the whole thing here).

During the interview, Morgan talks about her platform called Project Impact: If Not You, Then Who?  She explained how important it is to do something to appreciate  people within your community. That’s why she organized #ImpactDays – to appreciate folks like firefighters and police officers by having folks write thank you notes or bake cookies.

“A lot of people feel like they need to make this huge time investment, and sometimes that’s required… But a lot of times, it just takes a few minutes a day to make an impact in someone’s life and to not be afraid to start small.”

That’s the kind of impact that goes a long ways for people who don’t normally get recognized – And we LOVE how she used the power of social media to motivate a greater audiences to go out and make a difference in their communities!

Morgan-Jackson

Junkies know Morgan has a wonderful future in front of her – and can’t wait to see her life beyond pageantry! Oh – and a quick side note – We also wanna give a great big shout-out to everyone from Indiana who allowed us join in the “clown car of awesomeness” at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen last summer… Still makes me giggle every time I think about it! 🙂

Weekend Wrap Up 6-11-16

HELLO JUNKIE NATION!!!

WHEW!  Ten state pageants in one night – and while you’d think I’d be pooped – I’m PUMPED instead!

First of all – I need to say what an amazing night I had Miss Kansas… Actually – let me re-phrase that… It’s been a pretty amazing weekend at Miss Kansas!!! It had been 19 years since I saw the Miss Kansas pageant, and it was pretty incredible to see so many formers come back to Pratt, Kansas…

unnamed-3

Only about 1/3 of them are pictured above… Caressa Kelley, Lesley Moss, Alyssa George, Amy Keller, Amy Shaw and Jennifer Vanetta! Ladies – You ALL look stunning!!! 🙂

Also – Please me to be a Junkie for just a moment…

I also had the chance to chat with Robin Wasson (Miss Kansas 1991) who was kind enough to tell me how much SHE LOVES the Junkies!!! Considering I was 17 when I watched Robin make the Top 10 at Miss America – you could say I was a little overwhelmed at her kind words and overall enthusiasm for everything we do!

unnamed-11

unnamed-8

unnamed-12

Seriously – Such. Encouraging. Fun! #SoHappy

In addition to seeing so many formers, it was pretty great to catch up with other long-time friends, and meet so many new friends as well!

unnamed-7

And although her Cheeze-its box isn’t pictured here – I still love me some Hannah Marie Wagner any time I can get it…

unnamed-5

Honestly – I couldn’t have asked for more!  Thank You Kansas for your hospitality and for being soooooooooo incredibly welcoming! I am absolutely blown away by how fabulous my weekend truly was!

Whew!  Now – Let’s talk State Pageant Results!!!

TEN state titles were awarded last night – and let me tell you – it was fast and furious on social media! In case you missed our posts (or just wanna re-live the fun and fanaticism) – Here’s a full list of your finalists/winners:

WOWZERS!  That’s a lot of FABULOUSNESS!

Big Junkie Congrats to all our winners and those who placed last night… If your pageant was anything like what I saw at the Miss Kansas pageant, I’m sure you enjoyed quite an amazing show with extremely talented, articulate and beautiful young women!

Now – It’s great to see young women achieve their dreams – But it’s time to hold the Junkies accountable for their picks!  Therefore – let’s check it out! How did we do???

NEBRASKA – 2/5
picked Lianna Prill and Aleah Peters

NORTH DAKOTA – 3/5
picked Cara Mund, Kylie Helm, Reyna Bergstrom

IOWA – 4/5
picked Meredith Olson, Jessica Baker, Johanna Vittetoe and Kelly Koch

MONTANA – 2/5
picked Alysse Charlesworth and Loren Scofield

DELAWARE- 4/5
picked Mikayla Ryan, Emily Beale, Katelyn Mayers and Amanda Debus

HAWAII – 3/5

That means, we finished 33/50 and only missed only 2 state winners (North Dakota and Hawaii) making us 8/10 this weekend!

When you add these numbers to our grand total thus far for Miss America 2017, here’s where we land…

14/17 = 82%
(identifying the winner)

51/82 = 62%
(identifying Top 5 finishers)

While I would consider that a PRETTY DARN GOOD WEEKEND – I also have to caution everyone… Because there are FIFTEEN state pageants next week!

State Pageants 2017

Yes – It’s another HUGE weekend of state pageants coming up – And honestly, we still have A LOT of states that need another round of research before we post any predictions!

By the way – In case you missed any of our predictions this week, you can still receive them for next weekend by signing up here…

Who will be the next set of ladies to attend Miss America 2017???

Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Junkies Predict Miss Delaware 2016

Brooke Mitchell is one of those uber-talented ladies who just couldn’t decide which talent she should display at Miss America…

Photo by Dave Chambers for DelawareStateNews.net
Photo by Dave Chambers for DelawareStateNews.net

During her pageant completion years, in Delaware’s Outstanding Teen as well as Miss Delaware, Brooke “rotated talents” pretty regularly.  Sometimes she danced, sometimes she twirled, and sometimes, she tapped.

Interestingly enough, people suggested that perhaps she could combine some of her talents together… Which is exactly what she did on the Miss America stage! Introducing, the Miss America “Twirl Tap” Talent!!!

2016-miss-america-preliminary-competition_4910528

2016-miss-america-preliminary-competition_4910529

Turns out, the “Twirl Tap Talent” was a pretty good choice for Atlantic City… Brooke came home with a Non-Finalist Talent Award for her performance at Miss America!  In fact, Delaware has been on a roll lately – Seven out of the last eight Miss Delaware winners have gone on to win a special award at Miss America! Congrats Brooke on extending that streak and doing the state of Delaware proud!

During Brooke’s podcast with us (which airs next week!), she talked about how she “kinda stumbled” into several things during her time as Miss Delaware.  It’s a good reminder to all of us that sometimes the blessings in disguise are the things you need to pay attention to when preparing for a once in a lifetime experience.

Junkies wish Brooke all the best in her future endeavors!  And who do we think has the best chance of extending Delaware’s streak next year at Miss America?

Junkies Predict Miss Hawaii 2016

Jeanné-Kapela-was-crowned-Miss-Hawaii-2015

When it comes to the Miss Hawaii pageant, there are lots of pageant fans who wake up Sunday morning and check to see who the winners are from the night before…

Then, there are Pageant Junkies like myself who say things like, “Gosh – I’d love to stay up and watch the Miss Hawaii live stream – but I’ve got to go to bed…”

Only to be followed by a similar phrase that goes something like this…

“Ok – just a through the Talent competition… then, I’m gonna call it a night…”

And before you know it – It’s 3:30 in the freaking morning and you end up giving yourself a pep talk that sounds something link…

“Bucker up Buttercup!  Can’t possibly go to bed now! They’re about to crown the winner!”

LOL! 🙂

I don’t know about you – but I end up having this exact same conversation with myself EVERY YEAR! Lol!

You could blame it on the amazing production Hawaii does every year… Or on the fact that every Junkie I know would jump at the chance to watch a pageant while spending some time in an island paradise…

But in the end, I think it’s the adrenaline from 9 previous state pageants held that same day – and the desire to see another young woman’s crowning moment come to pass, that causes me to lose vital hours of sleep. After all, I’m not as young as I once was.

Last year, after having the above conversation with myself, I stayed up to see Jeanne Kapela be named the winner. She was a gloriously fluid lyrical dancer who absolutely stood out above the crowd during the state pageant.

"©2015 Ranae Keane"

But it’s Jeanne’s platform of preventing Human Trafficking that made her year so special. Jeanne’s cousin was sold into sex slavery at the age of 14 and when Jeanne found out, she decided to dedicate her year (and likely her life) to ending human trafficking. It turned out, Hawaii is the only state in the union that doesn’t have a law specifically banning sex trafficking… Which gave Jeanne’s year new purpose.

In early May, all of Jeanne’s hard work paid off – as Hawaii passed HB1902 and officially made sex trafficking a felony offense.

Junkies say Congratulations to Jeanne – Not only for winning the title of Miss Hawaii, and for being named Miss Congeniality at Miss America, but for doing something extra special during your year that will have lasting repercussions for years and years to come.

What a great reminder for all of us… Your state title is about a whole lot more than just the crown… If you’re serious, you can use your state title to make a difference for generations.

Miss-Hawaii-2015-Spcial-Media-0110

And in case you’re wondering… YES! We do believe the Miss Hawaii pageant will be streamed again this year! Although I don’t know the link right now, I will post it on social media when I find it!

And now – who do Junkies think has the best chance at being named Miss Hawaii 2016?

Get Yourself a Pageant Brand

From MissUniverse.com
From MissUniverse.com

In case you thought Pageant Branding was dead (or just for contestants in the Miss America system), think again.

Last weekend, Miss USA crowned Deshauna Barber, a 26 year old commander for the 988th quartermaster detachment unit at Fort Meade, Maryland, just outside Washington DC. She’s also an IT analyst, and gave arguably, one of the most memorable on-stage answers in recent pageant history.

From Brietbart.com
From Brietbart.com

And here’s the interesting thing… If I asked you to tell me something ABOUT each of the Top 5 contestants (not just DC), chances are, you’d remember a thing or two about them… If not, here’s a few reminders…

– Hawaii played collegiate volleyball and got the tough question
– California’s dad was Rico Suave and she was people’s choice
– Georgia has a racially diverse and supportive family
– Alabama is a small town country girl with a lot of pets!

From Parade.com
From Parade.com

Even members of the Top 15/Top 10 – had some pretty memorable stories behind them as well…

– Virginia teaches at Hampton University, has her doctorate, and is CRAZY FIT
– Arizona overcame anxiety and is an advocate for mental health
– Connecticut is a trauma nurse (and her dad taught her to change the oil in her car)
– Missouri is an impressive athlete, and is headed to law school
– South Dakota has an international perspective after traveling to Africa to help young girls (and a super awesome/memorable evening gown)

Zaptoit.com
Zaptoit.com

And while you may think that’s just “stuff for television” – I’m here to tell you, it’s more than that.

It’s Pageant Branding.

And you know what? Based on the results I saw on Sunday night, Miss USA is now on the Branding Bandwagon.

Ethan Miller/Getty Images
Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Think about it… Based on my social media feed – A LOT of people had Hawaii as their winner going into the Top 5. She was stunning, styled beautifully, had a super strong ‘presence’ about her, and many people thought she looked like someone who should be walking on the Miss Universe stage.

But along came Deshauna.

Miss USA Facebook page
Miss USA Facebook page

You know what? Deshauna was getting a few nods here and there because of her story – She wast completely off the radar so to speak. But, it wasn’t until she opened her mouth and started speaking that she began to surge to the front as a top candidate for Miss USA. Why?

Because once Deshauna spoke – Everyone realized that she knew her brand.  Plus – she was able to refer to her brand not once, but TWICE on the Miss USA stage.

Youtube.com from TMZ
Youtube.com from TMZ

Did it turn a few pageant fans off (hearing her talk about her military background in both answers)?  YES.  But did she win???

You bet your bottom dollar she did!

And in my opinion, Deshauna came from behind to win – I would guess she was in the middle of the pack going into finals night. But if there’s two things I know America tends to love – it’s (1) an underdog and (2) a strong woman who knows who she is.

Deshauna displayed both of those qualities on Sunday night – and IMHO, she snatched the crown away from the frontrunner (Hawaii) – all because when push came to shove, she reminded the judges of her unique Pageant Brand.

Ethan Miller, Getty Images
Ethan Miller, Getty Images

If you think Pageant Branding is only for Miss America contestants… Or, if you think Pageant Branding doesn’t matter – Think Again.

If Deshauna is any indication of the direction Miss USA is going, you better understand your pageant brand. Miss USA is under new ownership (IMG and William Morris Entertainment), and they produced an extremely classy pageant that felt more like the Oscars than a Reality Show. Now they have a winner with a killer brand.

“As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military… We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I’m powerful, I am dedicated and it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States.”

Ethan Miller, Getty Images
Ethan Miller, Getty Images

Are you still trying to be all things to all people? Are you still trying to please everyone without grounding yourself in who you are? Are you afraid of developing a strong brand because you’re afraid it might excluding someone?

Stop. Don’t give in to that kind of mammy-pamby thinking.

Instead – Embrace. Your. Brand.

Embrace the qualities that make you who you are! Those are the same qualities that allow people to remember you for your uniqueness!

Because here’s the thing… When you embrace who you are, pageant judges don’t think about how you’re excluding others… They only see how GREAT you are at attracting others!  As humans, we’re drawn to people who have confidence in themselves!  And in 99% of the pageants I’ve seen, judges want to crown strong women who know where they’re going, what they stand for, and how they plan to make their mark in the world!

Ethan Miller, Getty Images
Ethan Miller, Getty Images

Yes – Those of us who are die-hard Miss America fans finally got the chance to see the pageant we’ve been waiting for… Miss USA just crowned a strong, articulate, beautiful winner who will be remembered for who she was BEFORE the crown –

Is the beautiful? Yes. Is she fit? Yes. Was she elegant on stage? Absolutely. But for the most part, so were 51 other ladies on that stage.

What separated Deshauna from the pack? Her unique and laser focused pageant brand.

imrs.php

So here’s the deal… Based on what I’ve seen from Miss America, other pageant systems, and now Miss USA, it doesn’t look like pageant branding is going away anytime soon! If anything, I’d say it’s now more important than ever – regardless of whatever pageant system you’re in!

Therefore, given this new understanding of how branding applies to all pageant contestants, I am going to work on an even greater and more comprehensive branding system than we’ve ever done before.
