Junkies Predict Miss USA

10660122_10153599429452968_1135543702714523491_n

I gotta be honest – Just writing the title of this post, seemed a little weird…

For those of you who are new here, at Pageant Junkies, we kind of fancy ourselves as Miss America aficionados.  And up until this point, everything we’ve done has been in the name of Miss America (podcasts, blogs, online courses, competition tips, predictions, etc). Heck – I didn’t even see the Miss Universe debacle live because I was enjoying Christmas vacation with my family (although, in case you’re interested, I did take time to write fairly extensively about it here… ).

That’s why it’s come as a bit of a shock that I find myself in unfamiliar territory.

I’m about to offer public predictions for Miss USA.

I’m not exactly sure how this happened… But I do know, this is my attempt to “shake things up” and get out of my little MAO comfort zone. It’s time to see if  the skills I use when making predictions about Miss America are the same skills when predicting Miss USA.

Now – OBVIOUSLY – there are a few differences between the organization, therefore, there are a few differences in how I go about making my selections.

For example – This week, I watched the preliminary competition online! It was the first Miss USA prelim I’d ever seen – AND I WAS FLABBERGASTED (in a surprisingly good way!)!!!

From Miss USA Facebook page
From Miss USA Facebook page

First of all – I’m not sure we’ll ever see MAO post prelims online… It doesn’t seem to be the kind of thing they’re interested in doing (that’s not a knock on MAO – I just haven’t seen any indication that they think streaming prelims is a good idea… Which is totally their choice!).

Second – I could’t believe the fact that the whole thing took place in one night!  All 52 ladies competed Swimsuit and Gown on the same night, at the same time! I was shocked that the entire thing only took an hour and 20 minutes (LOL! Honestly – I had no idea!).

By comparison, Miss America prelims take place over 3 nights – each prelim night is 2+ hours long, and you see 4 phases of competition on stage instead of just 2 (No wonder MAO announces prelim winners each night).

MissUSA

In any event – I’m obviously throwing myself in the DEEP END by making Miss USA predictions when it’s not my first area of expertise. I might fall flat on my face – and never try this crazy experiment again.  Or, I might do “ok” this year and perhaps even a bit better next year… Either way, I’m excited to challenge myself on a new level!

Also – Because I’ve been a MAO girl to this point, I would be remiss if I didn’t at least give a shout-out to Miss Virginia USA Desi Williams (former VA MAO) and Miss Maryland USA Christina Denny (former MD MAO)! Also, Syndee Stottlemyre (current Miss Missouri USA) was Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen, and Caley Rae Pavillard (current Miss Colorado USA) was Miss Colorado’s Outstanding Teen as well!  All 4 ladies look stunning and have made the cross-over to USA look easy (and it’s not!).

I know there are several other ladies who’ve competed in MAO over the past few years… including Miss Maine Marisa Butler, Miss Kentucky Kyle Hornback, Miss New Mexico Naomie Germaine, Miss Indiana Morgan Abel, Miss South Carolina Leah Lawson, and Miss 52 Alex Miller! If I’ve missed others, then I apologize in advance! No offense intended whatsoever!

SO!

Now that all my blathering is over… LET’S GET TO THE PICKS!!!

Photo from Pageant Update - Courtesy of Carly Oz

Truth be told, I don’t know exactly how they’re breaking everything down this year… It appears we’ll have a Top 15 (or maybe a Top 16 with the People’s Choice), then a Top 10 – and we think a top 5, but it also seems as if they’re going to announce a Top 3 and the public has something to do with it…?

So – we’re just going to go the old traditional route and pick a Top 15, Top 10, and Top 5. Therefore – without further adieu, LET’S DO THIS!

MISS USA Top 15
Virginia
Texas
California
South Carolina
Nevada
Wisconsin
Maryland
Colorado
52
Hawaii
Oklahoma
DC
South Dakota
Pennsylvania
Georgia

My “bubble” contestants (ladies on the bubble who could also make it):
Connecticut
Michigan
Mississippi

NOW – On to Top 10
California
South Carolina
Colorado
Virginia
Nevada
Hawaii
52
Pennsylvania
Maryland
Oklahoma

Top 5
Colorado
California
South Carolina
52
Hawaii

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!!! Our first ever predictions for MISS USA!!!

From PageantUpdate.com
From PageantUpdate.info

Hey – And just because we’re new to predicting USA, it doesn’t mean we don’t still believe the following (which we say ALL THE TIME to MAO contestants…)

Ladies – If we say your name, we hope you prove us right!
But if we don’t say your name, we hope you PROVE US WRONG!

GOOD LUCK to everyone competing at Miss USA tonight!!!

Weekend Wrap Up 6-4-15

Welcome Back Junkies!

Today’s Weekend Wrap-Up is being posted on Saturday (rather than Sunday or Monday), because of our Miss USA predictions which will be posted on Sunday (and I’m guessing that means we’ll post a USA wrap-up on Monday)…

We’ve got ourselves another lovely young lady who’s headed to Miss America –

Kendall Bautista is the new Miss Alaska!

Photo from Miss Anchorage Org
Photo from Miss Anchorage Org

Kendall just shined in this beautiful “antique pink” lace evening gown – And as a former Miss Alaska USA, we’re guessing Kendall knew exactly how to bring her ‘presence’ to the stage last night! Kendall just graduated from the University of Alaska at Anchorage in journalism/communications – and played the piano for her talent.

From CriticalBeauty.com
From CriticalBeauty.com

Here’s the full breakdown from last night’s competition…

MISS ALASKA
Winner = Kendall Bautista
1st RU = Marlise Williams
2nd RU = Angelina Klapperich
3rd RU = Ellie Gottstein
4th RU = Harper King

Turns out, the Miss Anchorage Org had a pretty great night last night! Both Kendall and the new Miss Alaska’s Outstanding Teen (Danielle Stam) are from the Miss Anchorage Organization – AS WELL AS – 1st Runner up, Marlise Gibson! DANG! I’d call that a clean sweep! Congrats Ladies!!!

From MissAnchorage.org
From MissAnchorage.org

Junkies are SUPER GRATEFUL for the tweets and live periscope updates from Miss Anchorage (@MissAnchorage) – Without that lifeline into Miss Alaska, the evening wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun to follow! #BigJunkieThanks

From Kendall's Facebook page
From Kendall’s Facebook page

When it comes to our predictions for Miss Alaska, Junkies were 3 for 5, accurately identifying Kendall Bautista, Angelina Klapperich and Ellie Gottstein 🙂 That means, we’re not 6/7 so far when it comes to picking state winners and 18/32 when picking ladies who finish in the top 5.

But the crazy has not yet begun.

NEXT WEEK – 10 state pageants will take place on Saturday, June 11h… That’s right, TEN!

Which is really just a warm-up for the FIFTEEN state pageants that will take place between June 18th and 19th! You heard me – FIFTEEN!!!

State Pageants 2017

Therefore, if you’ve yet to join the Pageant Junkies Prediction Party, just click here to learn about Pageant Junkies Premium, and we’ll send you our Top 5 list for the remaining 46 state competitions (posted during the week that each state pageant takes place).

Our first predictions for next week’s state titles will be released on Monday, May 6th! Don’t miss out!

And once again ladies – Please Don’t Forget – Predictions are simply for fun! They have no reflection on your actual ability to do the job at hand! We want EVERYONE to perform at their very best level and achieve whatever is in your heart to achieve!

That’s why we always say…

If we say your name, we hope you prove us right!
And if we don’t say your name, we hope you prove us wrong!

Junkies Predict Miss Alaska 2016

For many pageant contestants, pageantry is their first choice for scholarships. But that wasn’t the case for Miss Alaska 2015, Zoey Grenier…

You see, Zoey was a biathlon athlete… And a pretty darn good one. Good enough to win three championships in the International Arctic Winter Games! But unfortunately, Zoey injured her shoulder and that meant she’d have to find another way to earn scholarships for a college education.

That’s when the biathlon ski champion became a pageant contestant.

And we’re sure glad she did! Zoey Grenier is a one-of-a-kind personality with a huge heart (hear for yourself on her podcast here)! And frankly, the fact that the Miss America Organization is a viable alternative for women like Zoey, means pageants are relevant today!

Even though she’s had to take a year off of biathlon to fulfill her duties as Miss Alaska, we know (and she knows), the experiences she’s gained over the past year will pay massive dividends down the road.

Zoey Grenier – Thank you for allowing your life to take a crazy detour – and letting us get to know you. I know many Junkies would agree – We’re better off because you took a chance on pageantry. 🙂

And now – Which one of these ladies do we think has the best chance of being named Miss Alaska 2016?

GOOD LUCK LADIES!!! Junkies LOVE Alaska!!!

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

(AP Photo/Noah K. Murray)
(AP Photo/Noah K. Murray)

Every once in a while, it’s good to do something that pushes you out of your comfort zone…

For most of you reading this blog, pageantry is the thing that pushes you out of your comfort zone (and believe me – it does!). But even in pageants, after a while, everything can become a bit too familiar… a little ‘routine’… aka – ‘comfortable’.

Even here at Pageant Junkies, we know we have to kick ourselves in the butt sometimes to try something new. Otherwise, we run the risk of losing our most ardent fans to another pageant information source.

Therefore, today’s post is all about the reasons why you should get out of your comfort zone – and how you go about pursuing something you’re not sure you can handle… (By the way – I’m calling some of you out right now… Because “not being ready” – is NOT a good answer! And YOU are the exact person I’m writing this post for today!)

Ready – Set – HERE WE GO!!!

TRY SOMETHING NEW – EVEN IF YOU DON’T “GET IT”

At Pageant Junkies, we’ve made LOTS of moves to “try something new” without really even realizing it. At first, our social media pages were just re-purposing material from other state organizations that were already online. We thought more people needed to see what we saw, so we shared it, and gained a few thousand new fans in the process!

We also grew because we offered a POSITIVE alternative to every other pageant commentary source out there! While many online exchanges have grown to become more positive, when we first started, there was A LOT of ugly stuff being said online. We wanted to be different. We wanted to highlight the positive, downplay the gossip, and give the fans something they could love! Turns out – It worked!

Nearly 16,000 social media fans later – our “new approach” was viable and sustainable (WHOOOO HOOOOOO!) But to be honest, I’m not sure we fully understood what we were getting into when we started – LOL! And if we had, we may not have started in the first place!  That’s why “not knowing” is NOT a good reason, to “not start” (ugh – don’t tell my English teacher I just wrote that sentence). If you have an idea – but you don’t know where it’s going to go, try it anyway! Who knows where you may end up???

START – BUT DON’T STAY

Once we realized re-purposing information was getting a bit stale, we realized it was time to once again “try something new”.  That’s when we moved into producing our own content showcasing our love of the Miss America program. After that, we quickly moved into distributing our own content across various locations (different social media platforms, our own website, iTunes, etc). And then, we created a whole freaking new library of content for people who want to succeed in pageantry called, Pageant Junkies University.

It’s funny because our original intention wasn’t about creating our own content AT ALL!  However – we quickly realized that we needed to move in that direction thanks to the natural progression of “Start – But don’t Stay”.

Here’s the deal.  When we first launched the Facebook page, I don’t think I could’ve begun to imagine everything Junkies does now! And lots of people who “start” things, ended up “staying” because they think they need to perfect what they’ve started.

Honestly – once you start, you can’t stay. If you do, you won’t make it. You have to move beyond the starting blocks and push yourself to do more than what your original vision had to offer… or you’ll never succeed. But “starting” and “not staying” are just half the battle – In order to fully get out of your comfort zone, you need to do one more thing…

LISTEN TO YOUR GUT

Shortly after the website had launched and our Miss America predictions had taken place, I had someone ask me, “So… What’s next for Pageant Junkies?”

I answered in a very nonchalant fashion… Saying something pretty indecisive, along the lines of…

“Uh… Well – Actually, I don’t really know… I mean, I’ve had a couple of different ideas… But I’m not really sure which direction I should go in…”

Then, feeling as if I was letting my friend down by not having a “real answer” I said,

“You know – I’ve actually been thinking that maybe I should do a podcast. Which kinda sounds crazy… But honestly, I can’t come up with a good reason why I shouldn’t do a podcast, so I guess that means I should start one…”

Honest to God’s Truth. That is how the podcast was born – HA!

I can still remember this conversation as if it were yesterday! Frankly – I didn’t even realize I wanted to a podcast until I said it out loud! LOL! That’s what’s so crazy!… I heard the words come out of my mouth and they made sense – So I did it! LOL!

Listening to your gut can be hard. Especially when there are a lot of other people out there trying to tell you what to do (or what not to do). AND – it’s double hard when you’re looking to do something that nobody else is doing or has ever done before…

But the truth is, your gut usually knows more than your brain. Your brain can rationalize a decision (talk you into something or talk you out of something) – whereas your gut, is your true self. And if you ever find yourself in a position where your gut “says something” like mine did, I implore you – Trust it!

WHICH LEADS ME TO THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT…

Therefore, in light of today’s lecture, I’ve decided to kick myself in the butt and jump out of yet another Junkies comfort zone… In fact, you’re the first to hear/read/see what I’m about to say!

This weekend – I’ve decided to do something I’ve never done before.

I’m going to offer predictions for the Miss USA Pageant.

Am I a little freaked out about it? YES!

Am I a little overwhelmed at the idea of doing it in light of 46 Miss America state pageants taking place in 5 weeks? YES!

Am I doing it because I’m mad at the Miss America Organization and I want to bring more attention to Miss USA? NO!

I don’t think anyone can question my love for all things Miss America… And if you do, feel free to look at the years and years of posts I have extolling the virtues of what I belive this organization does for young women. The reason I’m doing this – is because I’m practicing what I preach. I’m kicking myself out of my comfort zone.

I might fall flat on my head. I might go 0/15. I might not even come close to picking the winner… Or… I might do ok this year – and get better at picking USA ladies in the future.

Lord only knows what will happen – But I’m prepared to take the leap into the unknown! Why? Because even though I have no idea where I’ll land (or where this is headed) – I know I won’t get anywhere different, until I take the first step.

1320x560-d6603eb6cf

Therefore – I ask those of you reading this blog today… What step do you need to take that pushes you out of your own comfort zone??? Whatever it is… There’s a great big, bright future ahead – But only if you’re willing to take the first step. 🙂

55dc91fa4e07a.image

At her first local, Miss Kansas 2015 Hannah Marie Wagner didn’t even know what the 4 points of the crown represented – but less than a year later, she walked on the Miss America stage! Given that experience, you can bet she was emotional when she realized the enormous opportunity she’d been given! But today’s interview is far from emo… In fact, you’ll never guess what dance move Hannah performed in the middle of her Miss America interview – (No seriously – You’ll NEVER GUESS!)… All on today’s Pageant Junkies Podcast…
