Podcast Tribute to Miss America, Part 1

enhanced-buzz-wide-20006-1338260826-2

THERE SHE IS…

Believe it or not, these are all the contestants in the very first Miss America Pageant back in 1921!!!  The winner, Margaret Gorman from Washington DC, is the 3rd from the left (in the pirate hat).  Notice these are their competition swimsuits… Yes, this is what they were wearing when the judges made their decision – LOL!

Also, it’s always good to know that even back in 1921, some ladies had trouble remembering to always stand with “pretty feet.” 🙂

Here are a few additional photos of Margaret Gorman, Miss America 1921…

THOUSANDS of people showed up to watch the very first “Atlantic City Pageant” in Atlantic City, New Jersey!!!!

FILE- This 1921 file photo shows Miss America beauty contestants on Atlantic City's seafront for the first Miss America Beauty Pageant. The pageant was won by 16-year-old marbles champion Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C. With critics hailing "Boardwalk Empire," the HBO series set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, as perhaps the best of the fall TV season, the 12-episode series will keep Atlantic City in the nation's consciousness far longer and better than any ad could. 4v_ryapZ

Between 1975 and 1990, Miss North Carolina never made the Top 10 – But Jennifer Vaden (Smith) Barth did it, and changed the story for NC in ’91. Years later, she came back to Miss North Carolina and offered to help grow the pageant that changed her life.  Now, she’s an Ambassador for the newly created Miss America State Titleholders Association (MASTA) and plans to help young women across the country change their own stories – whether they’re involved in Miss America or not!  Her vision is awesome – and contagious… Just listen!

#76: Danica Tisdale Fisher, Miss Georgia 2004

FinalDanica

Growing up, Danica Tisdale admired women like Debbye Turner and Marjorie Vincent.  Then, when Danica became the first African-American to be named Miss Georgia, she suddenly found herself serving as a role model for a new generation of young girls in her own state.  It’s hard to believe she entered one of the largest locals in Georgia “on a whim,” before coming out of nowhere to win her state title!  How did she do it?  Find out – on today’s Pageant Junkies Podcast…

#75: Dana Dalton Judge, Miss Florida 1990

Dana

The myriad of Miss America experiences Dana Judge carries is remarkable.  She competed in 2 different states and then won a Preliminary Swimsuit award in Atlantic City… She’s been a judge, emcee, director and state board member – and if we tell you anymore it’s going to spoil the podcast!  Trust me when I say, everyone can see a little bit of themselves in Dana, which is why this former Miss Florida is still a favorite today.  Enjoy!

#74: Shantel Swedlund Krebs, Miss South Dakota 1997

Shantel_Krebs

Let’s be honest… The media does not have a clue how to cover former pageant contestants who decide to run for political office.  Good thing there are people like Shantel Krebs, who are shattering the “pageant girl” stereotype and proving it can be done!  As the Secretary of State for South Dakota, Shantel talks about how pageants did a great job of preparing her for public office – and she also has a thing or two to say to young women aspiring to be elected officials in the years to come!
