#136: Alisa Vasquez, NY OT 2015

12923205_921590094620735_826466156235039403_n

“I knew I would gain sisters, but I didn’t know I was going to gain a family…” That’s how Alisa Vasquez described her year as Miss New York’s Outstanding Teen. Alisa was the non-finalist interview award winner at MAOTeen – And when you hear today’s podcast, you’ll absolutely understand why! Her wisdom, energy and communication skills, rival that of many “Miss” contestants – Which is why she’s a fabulous choice for today’s Pageant Junkies Podcast. 🙂

Weekend Wrap Up 7.10.16

HELLO JUNKIES!!!

WE DID IT!!! WE MADE IT THROUGH STATE PAGEANT SEASON!!!  And check it out – These are the ladies who will compete at Miss America 2017!!!

Miss America Class of 2017
Miss America Class of 2017

I’m never so happy as I am when STATE PAGEANT SEASON is OVER!!!

For those of you wondering… Yes – the act of crowning a new Miss America scores pretty high on the ‘happiness scale’ as well 🙂 But honestly, that’s more of a “Whooooo-Hooooo-this-was-super-fun” kind of happy… This is more like a “Dear-Lord-I’ve-been-working-on-this-since-April-and-it’s-a-wonder-my-husband-didn’t-leave-me” kind of happy 🙂 See the difference? Lol!

Therefore, I am a combination of both kinds of happy to tell you the new Miss Arkansas is SAVVY SHIELDS!!!

MISS ARKANSAS – SAVVY SHIELDS
1st RU – Savannah Skidmore
2nd RU – Brooke Cornelius
3rd RU – Bailey Moses
4th RU – Ashton Purtle

Savvy is one more former Outstanding Teen to add to the class of Miss America 2017… And for those of you who’ve lost track – That makes SEVENTEEN total state teen winners! GOODNESS GRACIOUS!

And when it comes to the Top 5, Junkies correctly identified 2 of the Top 5

ARKANSAS – 2/5
picked Savvy Shields and Bailey Moses

Big Junkie Congrats to everyone in Arkansas – And now that our final contestant for Miss America 2017 has been selected – It’s time to take a moment and go through our predictions results for the entire year…

First – a couple of things to keep in mind…

  1. I did not make any predictions for Miss Puerto Rico this year. Couldn’t find a comprehensive contestant list – Therefore, our totals will only reflect 51 state finalists
  2. Not every state announced a top 5 this year. Wyoming announced a Top 3 and Maine announced a Top 2. The grand total of Winners plus Runners Up = 250
  3. Just a reminder – Part of my challenge is to make my predictions BEFORE prelims start! I’m trying to determine if I what I see online about a contestant has any indication of how well she will perform at her state pageant. If I waited until after prelims were over, I’d be basing my predictions on a completely different set of guidelines.
  4. Last year, we ended up accurately predicting 75% of the women who won their state, and accurately predicting 54% of the ladies who finished in the Top 5. You can actually see all our 2015 results at this link here…  It’s a bit more convoluted to understand than what you see this year – but, you get the gist of it. 🙂
Miss Delaware
Miss Delaware

OK! Let’s take a look at the results… Judges… May I have the envelope please?

41/51 = 80%
Identifying Winners

131/250 = 52%
Identifying Top 5 finishers

That’s a 5% improvement over last year in our ability to predict Top 5 winners – Which makes this Founding Junkie VERY HAPPY and allows me to breathe a HUGE sigh of relief!!! And, our ability identify ladies who finish in the top 5 is a little less than going 3/5 at each state pageant.

Miss Kansas
Miss Kansas

Now – For those of you looking for a few more specifics regarding this year’s state pageant season, I can already sense some of the other questions rolling around in your mind right now… So – let’s see if I can address them one by one…

  • Which states did you miss in your predictions?

This year, Junkies missed New Hampshire, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Washington, Texas, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois, North Dakota and Hawaii.

  • Which states had your “best finishes” and your “worst finishes”?

We were only 1/5 in the following states: NH, MI, WI, NC and WA. However, we were 4/5 in NV, VT, KS, CO, AL, DE, IA, NJ and MD. It all kind of evens out.

  • Of the state winners you missed, how many winners were ‘on your radar’ and how many came out of thin air?

Half and Half. Five of the states ended up crowning ladies that we nearly placed on our Top 5 list, and five of the states, well, we never saw ’em coming.

MISS_KY_2016_140

  • Have you ever picked an actual winner?

So – here’s the deal… I don’t publicly predict a winner, but I have a system that helps me better understand how my predictions hold up in the light of day. That system is only known by me, a few super close Junkie friends and family honorary inductees, and my dog. It’s really just my own private way of seeing how well I really could do – if I were forced top pick a winner.

  • Ummm… So, I’m new here… HOW THE HECK DO YOU DO THIS???

lol! Great Question! If you’re new to Pageant Junkies and state prediction season, we hope you check out this link which tells you a little more about how this whole crazy prediction this first started.

Miss Mississippi
Miss Mississippi
  • So – Does that mean picking pageant winners is your full time job?

Lol! Well – It is now! Trust me – I am qualified to do other things (promise) – But, it’s the ‘other things’ I’ve done in life which allow me to be pretty good at this job now. I’m officially one of those ‘American Entrepreneurs’ hoping to provide people with products that offer a bit of fun and enrich their pageant journey.

  • So… What do we do now?

Lucky for you (and me) – State Pageant Prediction season may be over, but Junkies continue to take this predictions game “on the road” as we offer our predictions for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen AND Miss America! For each of those national pageants, we offer our predictions for each night’s preliminary winners, the semi finalists (Top 15/Top 10), and our Top 5 finishers! Can’t Wait!!!

Miss New Mexico

And there you have it!  BIG JUNKIE CONGRATS to the class of MISS AMERICA 2017!!!  So far, we’re LOVING the photos coming out of DC as all of the contestants have started their orientation – (see our Facebook page for pics) – And WE CAN’T WAIT until September!!!

Big Junkie Thanks to everyone who followed along this State Pageant Season! We can’t wait to see what these next 9 weeks have to offer!

Yup. I’m One of You.

You know, we spend a lot of time celebrating the “winners” here at Pageant Junkies – and that’s a good thing (I’m a firm believer in celebrating successes)… But today I want to talk about the rest of us who don’t walk home with the crown on our heads…

Yup. I’m one of you.

Original Photo by Shannon Millard

I only competed twice for the title of Miss Kansas… The first year was amazing. The second year, not so much. I decided to sit out my 3rd year, and ended up taking a job, moving out of state, and getting on with my life, during my 4th and final year of eligibility.

Here’s the deal.

Obviously, there’s a much larger population of people who’ve lost their state title – than there are those who’ve won a state crown. 🙂

Quick tangent here – Yes, Yes, I know… I can hear someone out there cringing at my last statement – dying to give me those positive affirmations right now… Something along the lines of…

“C’mon Carrie! Don’t say you lost! We’re all winners… “

“You know – I’m a firm believe that you never lose if you learn something… “

“Look – I’m sorry this happened… but maybe it’s just not meant for you… “

“You don’t need this! God/The Universe/Someone else has something bigger and better for you… “

Phooey.

Look – Those are all well-meaning statements – Usually said by some very, very, very nice and well-meaning people, who probably love you A LOT. But let’s be honest. Even if those things are true, they don’t take away the sting from falling short of your goal. And believe me, I know all about the sting.

Erin Lefevre | MLive.com

Now, while falling short of a dream with a deadline is painful, it’s not nearly as painful as selling yourself short because 5/7 people subjectively decided “it’s not you”.

And that’s where the real-life-application stuff begins.

Allow me to explain.

I can spot winners. And I’m not talking about whether or not I pick you for the Top 5 in your state pageant. I mean, I can spot which women will be the strong, confident, successful people in ‘the real world’ – whether a pageant judge sees them that way or not.

And ladies – listen to me when I say – There is NO NEED to get ‘stuck in a moment’ where someone said “it’s not you.”  Here’s why…

Many times, I feel the ladies who AREN’T selected as their state titleholders, are the ones who go on to prove something. They’re the ones who won’t allow the opinion of 5 people to be the final judge and jury of their lives. In fact, time and time again, I’ve seen the pageant “losers” go on to become much stronger, and much more accomplished people, than the “winners” ever were.

Kamie Stephen - North Platte Telegraph
Kamie Stephen – North Platte Telegraph

Further (and I’m very sorry ladies, but this is the truth) – Throughout your life, you’re going to find times when you don’t get what you worked for. Even if you deserve it. Even if you might be better than the person who did get it. There will be times when things don’t work out the way you want them to – and what’s worse – sometimes, there are no answers! No reasons why! Unfortunately, rarely is there ever a legitimate explanation that makes everything better – when you know you could’ve been AMAZING at whatever it is that you’re not going to be doing.

Dwelling on a “why” that may or may never come is not a good idea. Instead – the key is to keep going.

Case in point.

And as I sat at the Miss Kansas Pageant a few weekends ago, watching the 4 ladies who were each crowned Miss Kansas during my 4 years of eligibility, something smacked me in the face.

Everything I’ve done SINCE those years, is my success.

Not my pageant history.

http://davidpickering.biz
http://davidpickering.biz

I never won the title of Miss Kansas, but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved since those days. Not to toot my own horn too loudly, but I worked my way up the corporate ladder at a publicly traded company on Wall Street. When I was named a General Manager, I was the youngest, and the only female GM in the company, serving in the number 4 market, and we were one of the largest grossing revenue clusters in the nation. Later, I became the VP of Sales for a different organization – again as the only female and the youngest in the room. Further, my husband and I started a non-profit organization which helps orphans in Africa, after adopting our son from Rwanda. And I’m a hog-farmer’s daughter, from a town of less than 150 people (graduating class = 14).

But I never won the title of Miss Kansas.

So – as I sat there, in the audience, watching the lovely ladies who wore the crown and the sash all those years ago, I wasn’t upset or jealous or envious of what those other ladies had achieved.

Why not?

Erin Lefevre | MLive.com
Erin Lefevre | MLive.com

Because I knew my success wasn’t their success either.

20 years ago, I thought I needed to be one of those ladies who walked on the stage as a “former” in order to prove my success.

Turns out, I was very, very wrong.

Winners are easy to spot. They’re the ones who believe in themselves and their own ability to achieve whatever they choose to achieve. And many times, that kind of person doesn’t have the best talent, or the best interview, or the best body.

What that person has – is an unrelenting belief in themselves.

Now – I realize that sharing my story may not necessarily take “the sting” away from you either.  As I said earlier, I know all too well about the sting. It’s very real.

However – I do hope that by sharing my story, you’re able to see something that perhaps you’ve lost in the past few days/weeks since your state pageant…

Somewhere inside you – You’re still the same vibrant, exuberant, confident young woman, who walked into your state pageant. That person – the one who was ready for the job of Miss fill-in-the-blank… She’s still in there!  You saw her once – Heck, you WERE her once! Only a few days/weeks ago!

Steven Palowski Photography
Steven Palowski Photography

And you know what? That person – The one who believes in the possibility of her dreams – That person is DYING to get out and show the world what she still has to offer.

Do yourself a favor.

Let her out.

And watch her shine…
