Weekend Wrap Up July 3, 2016

HELLO JUNKIE NATION!!!

THANK GOD IT’S NEARLY OVER!!! LOL!

What started on April 23rd is nearly complete… We’ve now crowned 51 out of 52 state contestants for Miss America 2017 – leaving only the state of Arkansas left to name their winner next weekend!

13532823_10154338391556248_489690621792169370_n

And after the last two weekends of watching/keeping up with 15 & 13 state pageants at time, I gotta admit, last night was a breeze to follow and report on social media… I almost wondered if someone slipped me half a Xanax in my favorite 4th of July weekend beverage! Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezey… 😉

However – Before we get to the 7 state pageants from last night – we need to congratulate a couple of winners from last weekend… On Sunday afternoon, we crowned a new Miss West Virigina and a new Miss Puerto Rico!  Here are the results!

From Morgan Breeden's Facebook page

MISS WEST VIRGINIA – MORGAN BREEDEN
1st RU – Abigail Harmon
2nd RU – June Braunlich
3rd RU – Bethany Lojewski
4th RU – Katie Rose

And then… There was MISS PUERTO RICO – CAROLE RIGUAL

For the record – I didn’t make any predictions for Miss Puerto Rico. I couldn’t tell if there were 4 or 5 contestants – and I could only discover 2 names – So we just decided to punt. And I have no clue who the runners up were. Congrats to Carole – and I won’t count PR in my overall totals either way. 🙂

AND NOW –
Let’s talk about our amazing winners
from last night!!!

MISS OREGON – ALEXIS MATHER
1st RU – Jennifer Albertson

A couple of quick notes on the night…

  • This now makes SIXTEEN former Outstanding Teen state winners who are headed to Miss America! AZ, DE, FL, IN, KY, LA, ME, MS, NV, NH, NJ, NY, NC, SC, WV, CA, By far the largest amount of OT’s we’ve ever had!
  • So – I’ll admit… There was a point last night where I thought I was gonna miss 3 or even 4 states out of this group. NOT A GOOD FEELING TO HAVE… Especially when several ladies were my ‘6th pick’ (*cough*cough* – Caroline & Alicia). Nice work ladies – You guys totally proved me wrong! 🙂
  • Just a reminder – The crazy part of my picks is that I make them BEFORE the prelims even begin! Trust me – LOTS of times my picks would change if I waited until after prelims are over… But that’s not the rules I set up for myself.

Now – How did Junkies do regarding our predictions for these 7 states?  Let’s take a peek!

WEST VIRGINIA – 3/5
picked Morgan Breeden, June Braunlich, Katie Rose

KENTUCKY – 3/5
picked Laura Jones, Talia Horn, Annie Franklin

MASSACHUSETTS – 3/5
picked Alissa Musto, Jillian Zucco, Alyssa Weathersby

FLORIDA – 3/5
picked Courtney Sexton, Victoria Humphrey, Taylor Tyson

TEXAS – 2/5
picked Morgana Wood, Madison Fuller,

CALIFORNIA – 2/5
picked Jessa Carmack, Izamar Olaguez

WASHINGTON – 1/5
picked Taryn Smith

OREGON – 3/5
picked Alexis Mather, Jennifer Albertson, Audri Rousseau

That means we go 6/8 with this group and 20/40 overall. For those of you who haven’t been following along all state pageant season, let’s add in our previous predictions results and see where we currently stand:

40/50 = 80%
(Identifying Winners)

129/244 = 53%
(Identifying Top 5)

WHEW! Now that’s A LOT of pageants – But it’s not over yet!!!

State Pageants 2017

As I mentioned earlier, Miss Arkansas will be crowned NEXT weekend, giving us our 52 contestants for the title of Miss America 2017!!! WHO WILL SHE BE??? I’m chomping at the bit already!!!

Couple of quick notes before we close this post –

First – there’s A LOT that’s about to happen between next weekend and Miss America… Including MISS AMERICA’S OUTSTANDING TEEN!!! And once again, Junkies are headed to Orlando to see MAOTeen in person – And YES – We will be making predictions for MAOTeen!!!

254370

And of course, we’ll also be making our predictions for #MissAmerica come September! Believe it or not, there’s not much time between either of these events! It’s only 5 weeks until we crown Miss America’s Outstanding Teen – and 10 weeks until we crown MISS AMERICA 2017!!!

If you missed some of the craziness of state pageant season (or you just want to relive it all over again) – just click here to be connected to ALL the state results thus far…

From Miss New Mexico's Facebook page

Until then – We’ll be watching our state winners closely, in hopes of getting to know them a bit better between now and Atlantic City! OH! This means you also have one more chance to repeat our predictions mantra to yourself – or to random strangers on the street – Your choice…

If we say your name, we hope you prove us right
And if we don’t say your name, we hope you prove us wrong!

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND JUNKIES!!!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes In Pageantry

Anyone feel like the world of pageantry is starting to shift right before our very eyes???

I’ll admit – I don’t have finger on the pulse of each and every pageant in the country, but let’s see if we can hit a few of the highlights…

MissUniverseFanPage
MissUniverseFanPage

First, Donald Trump sells his stake in the Miss USA/Miss Universe program to the current ones, IMG/WME… Then, the whole Miss Universe/Steve Harvey ‘wrong winner announced’ nightmare… Then Miss America says local titleholders can longer compete at Miss Sweetheart (after 70 years)… Then Miss USA crowns someone who most people would say is a great choice – but a significant departure from the “type” of winner Miss USA usually crowns… And now – Miss Teen USA contestants will no longer be wearing swimsuits/bikinis – instead, they’re opting for “athletic wear”

I find it all FASCINATING!

Katherine Haik, Miss Teen USA 2015, poses with Olivia Jordan, Miss USA 2015 and Paulina Vega, Miss Universe 2014 following the Miss Teen USA 2015 Competition from Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in The Bahamas on Saturday, August 22, 2015. HO/ Miss Universe L.P., LLLP

What’s it all mean? Well – I’m not going to pretend like I have all the answers… But I do have a few thoughts. 🙂  First – if you want to read my thoughts on the new direction Miss USA is going in – click here…

And if you want someone to explain all the nuances behind who’s eligible for the National Sweetheart pageant and who’s not – click here… For the rest of this post, we’re gonna talk about Miss Teen USA…

From YouTube.com
From YouTube.com

Look – I get it. If I had a 14-16 year old daughter on national television parading around in an itsty-bitsy-teenie-weenie-yellow-polka-dot-bikini, I’d feel uncomfortable. I’d wonder what kind of message I was sending to her about growing up to be a strong woman. And I’d worry about who was watching her prance around in nearly nothing.

In that sense alone, I think this is a wise move. I’m not being prude – I’m being prudent.

However – (and call me cynical) – I don’t think that’s the sole purpose behind this decision.

You can call it “re-branding”

You can call it “a reflection of the culture”

You can even say it’s all about “the changing face of female power…”

But in my mind – the decision to remove the swimsuit portion of the Miss Teen USA pageant, is also about getting more contestants.

Now – Don’t get me wrong… Hear me out… I actually believe having more contestants is a very good thing! Think about it!

More contestants means more young women get to experience all the amazing benefits of pageantry!  The personal growth, the development of courage and confidence, communication skills, stage presence, the ability to push yourself past what you think you’re capable of doing – These are all INCREDIBLE life-long skills and benefits learned from pageantry!

From Miss Universe
From Miss Universe

On top of that – more contestants means more parents get the chance to see what pageants do for their daughters and thus, they’re more likely to let go of any previous misconceptions about pageantry (plus tell their friends and neighbors).  More contestants also means more people raising awareness and fundraising for the causes they love the most! And ultimately, more contestants means there will be a greater pool of ladies to choose from – which usually leads to stronger winners overall (iron sharpens iron).

However – let’s face it… If Millennials get even the slightest sense that the ultimate reason for more contestants is more money (greed) – They they’ll have a total hissy fit and quit!

Katherine Haik, Miss Louisiana Teen USA 2015, is crowned Miss Teen USA 2015 by Miss Teen USA 2014 K. Lee Graham and Miss USA 2015 Olivia Jordan. She celebrates on stage after the crowning from Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in The Bahamas on Saturday, August 22, 2015. HO/ Miss Universe L.P., LLLP

Lucky for me – I don’t have serious issues with Capitalism (and this post is starting to veer off course in a hurry so let me bring it back…). In fact, I’m completely fine with more contestants, as long as the end result is one of two things…

First – As long as “more contestants” turns into “more money” which turns into “more scholarships” – or more prizes/opportunities for the winner/s, – Then I’m totally on board. I have NO PROBLEM with more money if it brings more sponsorships, more ticket sales, more incentive for a city to host a pageant (think more hotel rooms, more people eating at restaurants, more shopping, etc). If the end result is “more for the ladies who participate” then I’M ALL IN! No questions asked!

MissUniverse.org
MissUniverse.org

The second situation – Is if “more contestants” turns into “more REAL contestants” – then I’m totally on board as well. And by ‘real contestants’ I mean – I want to see ladies who don’t fit the pageant mold and aren’t penalized because of it. Ladies who have everything else it takes to be a fabulous national titleholder, except they don’t look like a freaking super model in a bikini. Ladies who have political beliefs that challenge the norm. Ladies who have the goods to change the world – as long as they aren’t required to change themselves for the pageant stage. If that’s the result of more contestants – then yeah… You had me at hello.

MissUniverseFanPage
MissUniverseFanPage

Only time will tell which direction pageants will fall… Even the best theories don’t mean a darn thing until they’re put into practice – and unfortunately, all the idealism in the world can’t make a payroll… But if this latest Miss Teen USA decision leads to less objectification and to more contestants, then it sounds pretty good to me.

Look – I’m not trying to set myself up as the ‘moral voice’ for pageantry. Not at all. But I  do believe things are changing. And that means, young women today have the chance to define what a “modern” pageant titleholder looks like.

Pageants should be about being YOU. Not trying to fit into the mold of what someone else thinks a pageant winner should look like.

If athletic wear causes women to feel less objectified and more empowered – then let’s do it.  If athletic wear causes more women to more confident in their own bodies and eliminates body shaming – then let’s do it.  And if athletic wear propels women everywhere to embrace their bodies and actually believe that healthy is the new skinny – THEN LET’S DO IT.

However – If athletic wear is only for the powers that be to be able to turn a greater profit because more contestants are participating, then we might need to think again.

As for me and my Junkie-world, I’m going to choose to believe the former, not the latter. And while I might understand, respect and appreciate the latter – I’m not so sure this generation would.

Junkies Predict Miss Washington 2016

Lizzi Jackson is one of the great pageant stories of 2015.

She competed twice for the title of Miss Washington. The first time, she didn’t even place. The second time, she won the whole darn thing!

We wanted to know how she went from “nada” to “the whole enchilada” in one year’s time… So, we asked Lizzi to be our guest on the Pageant Junkies Podcast (If you haven’t heard it yet – catch it right here)

From Lizzi's Twitter
From Lizzi’s Twitter

I’m not gonna spoil it for you – But needless to say – Ever since Lizzi “did this one thing” – her whole perspective on pageantry changed.  And that’s when, her whole life changed.

And THANK GOD IT DID! We’ve LOVED watching Lizzi on social media this year as she made numerous appearance and spoke to countless students about her platform: Community Through Mentorship: Investing in Our Future.

From Lizzi's Facebook page
From Lizzi’s Facebook page

We think Lizzi sums up her own year at Miss Oregon better than we ever could – which is why we’ve posted this paragraph from her Facebook page, dated May 10th…

As these final few weeks fly by, I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity to do what I set out to do as a titleholder; to inspire others to see the potential they have in themselves. The best part of being a titleholder is that I get to take my crown off and put it on a little girl (or boy’s) head. Doing that doesn’t just mean they are destined to be the next Miss America, but allows them to dream big. Allows them to see a future that they were too afraid to think about because it may never happen. Helping them to begin taking steps towards that future; that’s the crux of my platform. Wow. Crazy how 10 months in the best job ever can change your perspective on things

If that’s not the power of the crown – We don’t know what is…

From MissWashington.org
From MissWashington.org

Lizzi – Congratulations on your incredible year, on your courage to pursue the Miss Washington title, on your $5000 STEM Scholarship at Miss America, and for sharing your heart on the podcast. It’s been a pleasure to watch you this year – and I can’t wait to see all the incredible things you do with the rest of your life from here forward. #BigFans

Junkies Predict Miss Massachusetts 2016

From Meagan's Facebook page
From Meagan’s Facebook page

When people think about Massachusetts, they don’t normally think of pageants.

There are 114 colleges and universities in the not-so-large state of Massachusetts… And between Harvard, MIT, Amherst, Wellesley, Boston College, and many others – Education is REVERED (like Paul Revere! Get it?). Which is why the Miss America program (hello scholarships) is a great fit for smart ladies from Massachusetts – aka, Meagan Fuller, Miss Mass 2015.

From Meagan's Facebook page
From Meagan’s Facebook page

Meagan earned a boatload of scholarships through pageantry – which allowed her to cover her degree at the University of Alabama (where she graduated in 2 years), and a few more scholarship dollars helped her cover her Master’s in Public Health from Tulane University. Growing up in Massachusetts, Meagan always knew education was important to her – but she also knew, if she was ever to represent a state at a National Level in a pageant, she wanted that state to be Massachusetts.

Stephanie Vegliante Photography
Stephanie Vegliante Photography

Meagan is one of these people who pursued “her life” while she pursued pageantry. Pageantry wasn’t the only thing in her life – and it wasn’t her only goal in life (which she explains in her podcast with us – listen here). And frankly, that’s one of the reasons why we think she was so successful. 🙂

From Meagan's Facebook page
From Meagan’s Facebook page

And if you think Meagan is successful now, just wait until we see what she’s doing in 5-10 years! Meagan’s heading back to school this fall to get her MBA and will likely pursue a position in public health in the near future. Junkies have no doubt, wherever she lands, the people she works with will be lucky to have her!  ALL THE BEST MEAGAN!!!

And now – Who do Junkies think has the best chance at being named Miss Massachusetts 2016?  For the record, we have no clue. But we did put together a Top 5 list outlining our best guesses (because this pageant is NOT going to be easy!).

Junkies Predict Miss Oregon 2016

Miss Oregon 2015 Ali Wallace, had the great fortune of following in her mother’s footsteps this year…

From Ali's Facebook page
From Ali’s Facebook page

Tammy Fazzolari Wallace was Miss Oregon 1987 and competed at Miss America 1988 (which happens to be one of the years my sister and I recorded Miss America on VHS, and then subsequently watched it over and over and over again… Driving everyone around us crazy. We were exactly the same way about Miss America 1985). And when Tammy’s daughter Ali decided she wanted to compete in the Miss Oregon program, it’s because she was also a little girl who always enjoyed pageantry…

Amanda Ferguson Photography
Amanda Ferguson Photography

From an article in OregonLive.com…

“The real reason I’ve wanted to become Miss Oregon is because I grew up going to the pageant every year,” Wallace said. “This is just something that touched my heart as a child. I’ve grown up looking up to these women and always wanted to do something in return. Having the opportunity to inspire young girls and be a role model is unreal.”

From Ali's Facebook page
From Ali’s Facebook page

And that’s exactly what Ali received the chance to do this year… Ali’s platform is about Brain Injury Awareness – Stemming from the fact that she suffered a brain injury after falling while she was a varsity cheerleader her Freshman year.

In the same article, Ali says,

“I was 15 when I suffered my traumatic brain injury. At the time, I didn’t know what a concussion was, what a traumatic brain injury was. It wasn’t something you really heard a lot about, so I didn’t understand what I was going through.”

Ali also had the chance to travel to Japan this year, to help promote the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Ali was able to talk about Oregonian chocolates, honey, onions and coffee, hoping to expand Japan’s desire for more Oregon products.

Congratulations Ali on a wonderful year! Junkies are super excited you had the chance to spend this year doing so many wonderful things – and that you and your mom will always share this special bond.
