Junkies Predict Miss Wisconsin 2016

Pageants might’ve been a relatively new thing for Miss Wisconsin, Rosalie Smith – But impacting people, certainly was not new at all.

After Rosalie’s brother passed away from a drug and alcohol addiction, she started a fund called, COLIN (Centered On Loving In Need). In all the articles we found, Rosalie spoke very fondly of her older brother – but this article from the SWNews4U sums it up best…

images

“He was so smart and so talented,” she said. “He could play any instrument he put his mind to,” and spoke four languages.

Colin’s friends liked to party, and so did Colin, who despite a 4.0 grade point average “still wasn’t making the best life decisions,” she said. Occasional drinking became daily drinking, and then “he was operating at a blood alcohol level that would kill me.”

Colin collapsed with no heartbeat at a movie theater. He was revived and spent five days in detox. He recovered, went to college in Boston, and had a lucrative job lined up after graduation. But when he returned to Wisconsin, Colin’s friends returned to him. He went out with them, and was found alone, dead.

“If you have an addiction, you have an addiction for life,” she said. “One night didn’t kill him, but the weekend sure did — a weekend-long binge.

COLIN raises funds for those who can’t afford treatment… And according to the Miss Wisconsin website, “Rosalie wants to mend the gap between society and the real life struggles addicts face, proving that they are worth more than their addiction and they need our help. With the money she raises, she will support those who cannot afford rehabilitation on their own.”

Congrats to Rosalie for not only representing the state of Wisconsin so well, but also for choosing to make a difference in the lives of others through pageantry. Who knows how many people will get the chance to turn their lives around, thanks to the money raised through COLIN.

Daja Dial captivated hearts across the country during her year as Miss South Carolina.

And while you may know how amazing she was on the Miss America stage, you may not know how her whole pageant journey started!  From GreenvilleOnline.com…

3_zps0aofu9xe

“…Her journey… started innocently enough.

She drove from a state cheerleading competition in Columbia to the talent competition in Spartanburg to support her younger cousin. While there, a Miss Upstate Teen official approached her mother.

“She said, ‘Oh my gosh, your daughter is beautiful,'” Dial recalled. “Our pageant is next weekend. Please enter her.”

Dial and her mother decided to give it a shot. She was a natural.

“We have a joke where we say I messed around and won that pageant,” Dial said. “So that is how I fell into it. I just messed around and won that pageant and was bit by the pageant bug — and haven’t been able to get rid of it since.”

From Daja's Facebook
From Daja’s Facebook

lol!  I love it! Although I’m guessing Daja might say she didn’t exactly “mess around” in order to win preliminary Swimsuit at Miss America… or “mess around” to win the Miracle Maker award for bringing in $32,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals… and she certainly didn’t “mess around” to finish in the Top 7 at Miss America!

From MissSouthCarolina.org
From MissSouthCarolina.org

Although, I gotta say, sometimes we do “mess around” and win things – which cause our whole lives to shift in a different direction – And that’s a GOOD thing!

Daja – Thank GOODNESS you “messed around” and became a pageant girl. I know there are hundreds of people across the state of South Carolina and across the country who are better off because of it 🙂  Can’t wait to have you on the podcast – All the Best!

Weekend Wrap Up 6.19.16

HOLY – FREAKING – GUACAMOLE…

I’m not sure what just happened – But somehow, we crowned 14 brand new state winners last night – And we all lived to tell about it! HA!

Jason J. Molyet - News Journal
Jason J. Molyet – News Journal

What a crazy night! Honestly – I don’t know what I’d even compare it to – One second I’m watching a live stream, then I’m checking twitter, then Facebook, then going back to write down a group of semi-finalists, then wondering if I should check a different state stream – Then going back to twitter, then Facebook, then double checking the correct spelling of everyone’s name – All while trying to remember who’s up for the next crowning!

Seriously. Thank God it was just me and my laptop tonight. If anyone else had been around, they might’ve checked me into the looney bin.

But survive I did!  And when it was all said and done – We crowned ourselves a lovely group of ladies who are headed to Miss America 2017 in Atlantic City!!!

In case you missed the insanity (or just want to see it all again), here’s a full rundown of last night’s results…

A couple of interesting stories to highlight…

Kylee Solberg – The new Miss Idaho was named the National Sweetheart last year – Which makes is back to back years that Idaho won National Sweetheart and then came back to win her state! (Congrats Kylee!) Overall – It turned out to be a pretty great night for ladies who’ve previously attended the National Sweetheart pageant – with 7 former Sweethearts winning their state titles last night!

Jason J. Molyet - News Journal
Jason J. Molyet – News Journal

Alice Magoto – The gal with the AWESOME ‘shock-and-awe’ expression at the top of the page, is the new Miss Ohio. She’s a 19 year old rookie (finished as a RU to Miss Ohio OT previously)! Not sure who the girl is behind her – but she’s equally “shocked-and-awed” as well! LOL!

Erin O’Flaherty – The new Miss Missouri is an openly gay contestant and as such, will be the first to walk on the Miss America stage (unless we crown a second one between now and the middle of July). I’m guessing there’s a strong possibility she’ll be America’s Choice come September!

Obviously, there are other stories here, but those are just a few of the most notable of the night!

And now – The big question on everyone’s minds (not really, but c’mon, humor me) – How did the Junkies fare last night with our predictions??? Well – Let’s take a peek!

From Dana Rosengard's Facebook page
From Dana Rosengard’s Facebook page

INDIANA – 3/5
picked Laura Merida, Rose McClimans, Brianna DeCamp

OHIO – 2/5
picked Sarah Clapper and Haley Hessellschwardt (which is by far, the hardest last name I had to spell last night)

MICHIGAN- 1/5
picked Arianna Quan

GEORGIA – 2/5
picked Brooke Doss, Patricia Ford

NEW JERSEY – 4/5
picked  Devon Vanderslice, Olivia Michael, Amanda Rae Ross, Brenna Weick

CONNECTICUT- 3/5
picked Alyssa Taglia, Bridget Oei, Jonét Nichelle

TENNESSEE – 3/5
picked Grace Burgess, Christine Williamson, Jeannette Morelan

13435405_1341856279162756_1476801151538988361_n
The Jackson Sun

IDAHO – 3/5
picked Hannah Menzer, Marissa Wickland, Kylee Solberg

MINNESOTA – 2/5
picked Madeline Van Ert, Kailee Ogden

MISSOURI – 2/5
picked Jennifer Davis, Katie Moeller

ILLINOIS – 2/5
picked Kristen One and Michaela Moe

UTAH – 2/5
(although, for the record, Utah had a Top 7, and we had 4 of the Top 7)
picked Lauren Wilson, JessiKate Riley

SOUTH DAKOTA – 2/5
picked Julia Olson, Megan Lipp

NEW MEXICO – 2/5
picked Stephanie Chavez, Ashley Fresquez

That means we finished 33/70, and only missed 3 state winners (Ohio, Illinois and Missouri) this weekend, making us 11/14!

Overall – I’d say thats a pretty fine job of picking winners (79%), but we need to step up our overall Top 5 game (only 47%). When you add these results into all of our previous predictions thus far, here’s where everything shakes out…

25/31 = 81%
(Identifying Winners)

84/152 = 55%
(Identifying Top 5 finishers)

Now – Nobody – and I mean NOBODY at Pageant Junkies HQ is taking any of this for granted! We may have come through the largest state pageant weekend in my memory, but Miss DC is on Sunday and there’s 12 more pageants next weekend! And honestly, 12 is not that much different than 14! lol! Quick! Someone tell my husband to make plans next weekend too!

State Pageants 2017

PS – Miss Puerto Rico is coming up THIS weekend…
And if you’ve seen a list of contestants, please let me know…
Otherwise, it’s going to be awfully hard for me to pick a winner… just sayin’

By the way, in case you missed any of our predictions from this week, you can still receive them for next weekend by signing up here…

ALRIGHTY THEN!!!
Until next week – When we play this game one more time… I expect everyone to practice their own “Shock-and-Awe” moments… Junkies LOVE seeing photos of ladies who will drop their jaws and throw their hands over their mouths in disbelief!

It’s pretty fabulous indeed 🙂

Until Next Week –

Junkies Predict Miss DC 2016

Haley Jardas is pretty amazing…

From Haely's Facebook page
From Haely’s Facebook page

When 12 Marines went missing off the coast of Hawaii last January, Haely Jardas’ brother Thomas Jardas, was one of them.

On Haely’s Facebook page, she wrote,

“My little brother was lost doing what he loved. He has always been and will always be my most important person. I hear his voice everywhere, and smile every time someone tells me how damn funny he was. I will never forget that laughter and I will share it for as long as I breathe”

Photo from Newspress.com
Photo from Newspress.com

I can’t begin to imagine the difficulty Haely and her family have been through… In fact, nobody would fault her if she wasn’t able to do anything else on behalf of Miss DC for the rest of the year. But Haely didn’t pack it in. Instead, she kept going.

In fact Haely’s family rallied, and while I can’t imagine the pain they all still feel, Haely has continued to sing and perform at events, as well as promote her platform, Mental Health Matters.

Haely’s platform is super meaningful to her, as she struggled with an anxiety disorder in college. Her goal, is to erase the stigma around mental health issues and making people aware of the services available to them, if they find themselves in a situation where they’re battling mental health.

Junkies wish Haely and the whole Jardas family all the best as you continue to move forward and serve others through your own difficult loss. “If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.”
