Weekend Wrap Up June 26, 2016

Hello Again Junkie Nation! Look at all the beautiful ladies we crowned last night???

PicMonkey Collage

Before we get to pageants – Can I be honest for a second? I had one H – E – Double Hockey Stick of a week…

Normally, I work all week long on my Top 5 picks… Like – some of you might be embarrassed if you knew how much work I put into these lists… But it’s not just the top 5 lists for this week – I’m also working ahead in order to be prepared for next week’s picks! Further, I make sure everything is “Just Right” before I release each state blog honoring the outgoing state titleholder (thank God I’ve been working on those since late April or I’d never make it!).

But last week – Life did not go as I had planned.

Last week, my parent’s basement flooded. As in, 350 gallons of water, soaking everything inside, flooded. Therfore, my family “called in re-encforcements” in order to get everything out of the basement, asap.

13495005_10103041116550021_6375562624254282880_n

So – instead of calmly researching, doing my insane amount of “googling” and working ahead – I was marching up and down stairs, emptying over 4200 pounds of costumes and other “stuff” from my parent’s basement (not a typo – 4200 pounds – and I would say “stuff” is putting it nicely). In the end, I was exhausted. Four days – asleep at 1am – 2am every night – and one whale of a leg workout.

Therefore – I apologize if this pageant week didn’t seem to have the normal level of “Pizzazz” you’ve come to expect from Pageant Junkies… I’m afraid I was a little short on the “Pizzazz” department – and a little pooped with predictions.

Whew! OK – Thanks for indulging me in that mini-therapy session…
Now let’s talk pageants!

Before we get to the 10 state pageants last night – We need to update everyone on the pageant that took place last Sunday, before last week’s Weekend Wrap Up was posted… The new Miss DC is Cierra Jackson!

WOWZERS! OK – Here’s a couple of items to note from last night…

– Big night for Clemson! Miss Clemson, Rachel Wyatt is the latest former MAOTeen National winner to hit the Miss America stage (Caitlyn Brunell being the first), AND the Miss Clemson team won both the Miss SC and Miss SC OT titles in ‘Famously Hot Columbia’ last night! In fact, 4 of the last 5 Miss SC titleholders have come from C – L – E – M – S – O…. N! (DANG!)!

Photo from Hannah Peay's Facebook page

– Teen Continue to shine… Of the 10 titles awarded last night, 5 of the winners were former state MAO Teen winners! SC, AZ, MS, LA and NC! That makes TWELVE former MAOTeen state winners headed to Miss America this year (ME, NH, NV, NY, DE, NJ, IN, SC, AZ, MS, LA, NC)!

– In the category of “It’s All Relative”…   MISS LA Justine Ker is cousins with former Miss CA and first runner up at Miss America, Crystal Lee! Also – MISS MD Hannah Brewer Dell is the sister of former Miss PA 2005, Nicole Brewer!

– MISS NC McKenzie Faggart wins the “all or nothing” award this week… After being a former Miss NC OT, McKenzie was the 1st RU her first year at Miss NC, before coming back the second year and winning prelim SS, but not finishing in the Top 10 at all. This year, she takes the whole darn thing! Congrats McKenzie!

Of course, there are additional stories – but those are just a few quick highlights for today’s post!

Now – given the fact that we were much more occupied with “flooding” than we were with “pageant picks” – Let’s see how this weekend shaped up for us at Pageant Junkies…

Photo from Miss DC Facebook page
Photo from Miss DC Facebook page

MISS DC – 3/5
picked Cierra Jackson, Shannon Lynch, Katelynn Cox

NORTH CAROLINA – 1/5
picked Victoria Huggins

MISS VIRGINIA – 2/5
picked Michaela Simon and Harlie Dale

WISCONSIN – 1/5
picked Sarah Newton

LOUISIANA – 2/5
picked Justine Ker and Emily Randon

SOUTH CAROLINA – 3/5
picked Rachel Wyatt, Suzi Roberts, Anna Mills Polatty

MISSISSIPPI – 2/5
picked Laura Lee Lewis and Anne Elizabeth Buys

PENNSYLVANIA – 2/5
picked Samantha Lambert and Cassie Cerulli

MARYLAND – 4/5
picked Hannah Brewer, Stephanie Meadowcroft, Sarah Robinson, Mary Teal Mulligan

WYOMING – 2/3
picked Jordyn Hall and Angela Thomas

ARIZONA – 3/5
picked Katelyn Neimiec, Madie Rose Holler, Hannah Morgan

As you can see, when it was good – it was good! But when it was bad, we were WAY off track! We missed NC and WI – and in both cases, only picked 1 of the Top 5 (Oh – and for the record, please know McKenzie and Courtney, that you were both on our short list! But for some silly reason we put someone else in the top 5 instead!).

Also – in complete disclosure, we picked 5 names for Miss WY and they only offered a total of 2 runners up and a winner… Of the 3 names, we only had 2 out of the 3.

Photo from Dana Henry's Facebook page
Photo from Dana Henry’s Facebook page

SO! Adding in the results from Miss DC (not previously counted) plus the 10 pageants last night, here’s what we know…

We finished 25/52 and only missed 2 state winners (NC and WI). That makes us 82% in picking state winners this weekend – but a dismal 48% in picking the Top 5. Maybe that whole flood thing was rough on us after all!

When you add in the cumulative total of how we’ve done thus far, here’s where we land…

34/42 = 81%
(Identifying Winners)

109/204 = 53%
(Identifying Top 5 finishers)

State Pageants 2017

And of course, WE’RE NOT DONE YET!!! There are 10 more pageants to go… WV and PR (both today/Sunday), along with TX, CA, KY, MA, FL, OR and WA next weekend… And then AR on July 9th!

Therefore – now is the time to PRESS ON – Regardless of what comes my way this week! The class of Miss America 2017 is not yet complete – Which means it’s time to hunker-down and FINISH STRONG!!!

Junkies Predict Miss Wyoming 2016

One of the things I love most about National pageants is the opportunity to find a “forever friend.” And while you may call it “stalking” – It’s my job to notice ladies whose friendships grow beyond the Miss America stage!  This year, Junkies absolutely fell in love with Miss Wyoming Mikala Shaw and her obvious friendship with Miss Hawaii, Jeanne Kappula! 🙂

From Mikaela’s Facebook page

On Mikaela’s Facebook page, she recognized how awesome her future friendship with Jeanne would become…

“Although I didn’t walk away from Miss America with a crown, I did walk away with an amazing new friend @misshawaiiorg! I can’t wait to travel to Hawii at the end of January and see her again! ✈️”

Love it Ladies!

As far as we can tell, Mikaela is the first violinist to compete at Miss America from the state of Wyoming… And we know she’s going to be successful, given the fact that she’s already a graduate of the University of Wyoming and will be headed towards her Master’s in Marketing in the near future!

All the best Mikaela! Junkies hope you and Jeanne have many more chances to create awesome memories in both of your lives!

And now, who do we think has the best chance to be named Miss Wyoming 2016?

Junkies Predict Miss Arizona 2016

LOL!  Oh my goodness – That FABULOUS description of what it’s like to win your state title, was given by none other than Madi Esteves, Miss Arizona 2015 (quote from 12News.com).

And it’s pretty good if we do say so ourselves!

Photo from MissArizona.org
Photo from MissArizona.org

Madi was Arizona’s first former Outstanding Teen state titleholder to go on and win the Miss title in AZ. Madi was able to pay for her community college education through her earnings from Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Tenn – and now, she’s attending Arizona State University with her additional Miss Arizona scholarship earnings.

During her year, Madi had a wonderful time promoting her platform “Empowering Individuals with Disabilities”, dancing and performing across the state, and wearing an awesome cactus costume during the Miss America “Show us Your Shoes” parade!

Junkies offer big Congratulations to Madi on her year – And look forward to seeing her graduate and succeed beyond the pageant stage!  Who knows – perhaps the new Miss Arizona 2016 will give offer the same thoughts and emotions that Madi did when she won the crown!

Junkies Predict Miss West Virginia 2016

2dOHgsV4
From Chelsea’s Twitter

I think Chelsea Malone wins the award for “best breakout” contestant of the year… Here’s what I mean…

Chelsea was recruited to participate in Miss West Virgina – And she did so well her first year that she finished as the 3rd Runner Up! Then, the next year she returned – and she finished as the 3rd Runner Up again! Finishing in the same spot 2 years in a row dramatically motivated her to work even harder and to be even better during her third year at Miss WV.

Getty Images - Donald Kravitz
Getty Images – Donald Kravitz

But to Chelsea, she didn’t want to just “work hard”… She also wanted to “work smart”… That meant, she had to sing what she wanted sing (not the kind of songs that typically win pageants)… And she had to choose the wardrobe that she wanted to wear (rather than dresses you’d typically see)…

And it’s a good thing she did – Because it absolutely paid off!

Not only did she win the Miss West Virginia title – She also became the first representative from West Virginia to make the Top 15 at Miss America in FIFTEEN YEARS!!!

488131876

If that doesn’t prove her status as a “breakout” contestant – I don’t know what does! If you want to know the story behind each of these decisions – and how she was able to determine what was right for her, then don’t miss Chelsea’s podcast here…  It’s well worth the listen!

11895304_10153715572142573_5150573669402968167_o

Because Chelsea took the time to learn this incredibly significant lesson through pageantry, Junkies know she is absolutely headed for success! There’s nothing that can stop a woman who is strong enough to know who she is, and isn’t afraid to show it! Which is why we wish Chelsea all the best in her future endeavors!

And now – who do Junkies think will be named Miss West Virginia 2016?

WOWZERS! We’ve made a list – but it’s going to be a close one in Morgantown!

Junkies Predict Miss Louisiana 2016

$70,000 (Not a typo).

That’s right, April Nelson earned $70,000 through competing in Pageants. Not “in kind” stuff… Actual, legit, scholarships through some incredible pageant programs who reward the kind of hard work and awesomeness that people like April have to offer.

Miss-La-2015-April-Nelson-Steven-Palowsky-Photography

April started as Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen in 2009. Then, she went to her dream school, Oklahoma City University, and competed at Miss Oklahoma for a couple of years (even being named Miss OCU with a significant scholarship attached), before returning to her home state and winning the Miss Louisiana crown.

At Miss America, April earned a Non-finalst talent award and a 3rd Runner Up finish – giving her $17,000 of her $70,000. But in addition to the scholarships, what’s one thing she’s really excited about?

She’s going to be in the Hall of Hair.

161094760

Yes – At Oklahoma City University, they’re known for their pageant queens.  So much so, that beyond the “Hall of Hair” – there’s a statue in honor of Jane Jayroe, Susan Powell and Shawntel Smith, who were all OCU students. And although April won’t be cast in bronze on campus, the Hall of Hair (aka – Hall of Fame) is still a pretty great honor 🙂

OKOKLmissamerica_reddick

To be fair, April is pretty awesome (and not fixated upon being in the ‘hall of hair’) – I really just wanted Junkies to know about the OCU story (#truth). Therefore, if you’d like to hear all about April’s incredible platform and her secret to winning the Miss Louisiana title, catch her podcast right here…

Junkies are super excited about April’s future – After her year is complete, she’s headed to Los Angeles to pursue music and acting – And Junkies wish her ALL THE BEST!!!  Good Luck April! We can’t wait to see you succeed!
