Have We Lost the Battle for TALENT at Miss America?

It’s no secret – there are plenty of Miss America fans who were not fanatical about Miss America 2015, Kira Kazantsev’s talent. The reasons why range from her red cup, to her seated position, to her bare feet (and that’s just getting started)!

In one of our more recent and more popular posts, we mentioned that “Entertainment Trumps Talent” now at Miss America. Since that post, we’ve had several of you request that we expand that thought, if you will… Asking us, “Is Talent no longer relevant at Miss America?”

According to many of you, the validity of the Talent competition – the single most important category, which used to be a defining factor in separating the Miss America pageant from other pageants – is now in question. Therefore, is it fair to ask… Have we lost the battle for Talent at Miss America?

Let’s see…

Once upon a time, Miss America contestants with outstanding technical talent and a darn good interview would walk away with the crown. In addition, when a newly crowned Miss America had what might be considered a ‘non-traditional talent’ or a ‘less than stellar’ talent, she usually had an outstanding drive, a compelling personality, and a warmth about her that caused even the staunchest Talent-lover to melt. Take Miss America 1988, Kaye Lani Rae Rafko.

Junkies remember sitting in our living room, glued to the television, anxiously waiting for Gary Collins to call out the winner’s name (especially after seeing some of our favorites be named in the runner up positions). When the emcee finally announced the new Miss America 1988 was, “MISS MICHIGAN” — I looked around the room, and with a bit of incredulity exclaimed,

“WHAT? The Tahitian Dancer???”

Years later, it’s obvious how and why Kaye Lani won the crown. Frankly, it was obvious within a few days! Kaye Lani declared she would dedicate her reign to promoting the benefits of hospice programs – and essentially launched the opportunity for Miss America to share her ‘platform’ with a greater audience. This simple idea changed everything – Miss America was no longer just a ribbon cutter who would smile and wave to the crowd. Suddenly, Miss America had a purpose for others.

So, while Kaye Lani’s Talent was considered ‘non-traditional’ – it’s obvious she was the right choice for the crown. Nobody even questions it.

Fast forward to today… Whenever a non-traditional talent is crowned, I try to give Miss America the benefit of the doubt. I realize how “right” it was to crown Kaye Lani – despite the fact that I thought it was utterly “wrong” at the time. So, considering Miss America has now crowned a few non-traditional talents in a row now (a tap dancer, a Bollywood dancer and a cup-playing singer), we need to take a peek at how we arrived to this point.

Here’s the deal. Miss America is now fully embracing the idea of “Entertaining Talent” – instead of good old fashioned “Impressive Talent”. And in our opinion, this ‘new wave’ of Entertaining Talents in the modern era, was instigated by none other than Sierra Minott, Miss Florida 2008 and 4th runner up to Miss America 2009 (and Florida’s Outstanding Teen in ’05).

If you haven’t seen Sierra’s Talent routine, I WISH I could post it for you… I’ve been raving about this routine because of it’s pure entertainment value ever since I saw her perform on TV! Seriously – I might be willing to pay someone to post the darn thing so you could see what I mean! In our opinion, it was Sierra’s choreography that set the tone for “Entertaining Talent” in the Miss America modern era. We’re not saying Sierra wasn’t talented and we’re not saying “entertaining talents” never made the top 5 before she did… We’re simply saying her extremely entertaining talent routine ushered in a new way of thinking about on-stage talent today.

We were so taken with her entertainment factor, that during our blog re-cap of Katie Stam’s crowning, we listed the following statement…

“…and spunky little Miss Florida just paved the way for a non-ballet dancer to be named Miss America within the next 2 years… Mark My Words!”

Turns out, 2 years was a little optimistic (lol!). However, within 5 years, Mallory Hagan won as a tap dancer and Nina Davuluri won as a Bollywood fusion dancer. Up until that time, it had been DECADES since a non-ballet dancer had won Miss America… then we crowned 2 in a row… Coincidence???

So – now that we’ve established how we arrived at this point – How do The Junkies feel about Talent verses Entertainment? Glad You Asked! Ready, Set, Here we Go!!! 🙂

THERE’S A DIFFERENCE!

First of all, understand that there’s a difference between something that’s “Entertaining” and and something that’s “Impressive”. In years past, “Impressive” talents would get you noticed strictly on your technical ability to master your art. How well you breathed, how many notes you could seamlessly deliver, how quickly your fingers moved along the instrument, how high your leaps and kicks were… In the past, these were all key factors in how well you scored in Talent. Now, your technical ability simply isn’t enough. You MUST be entertaining to boot!

THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE…

During the “New York Years” – aka, Since Mallory Hagan was crowned Miss America 2013 – we’ve seen a total of 15 girls finish in the Top 5. Of those 15 ladies, we’ve had a grand total of FOUR talents that we consider truly “classical talents” – and 2 of them came this year! Those 4 are: Courtney Garrett, vocal, VA ’15 – Lauren Kuhn, piano, MA ’15 – Rebecca Yeh, violin, MN ’14 – Crystal Lee ,ballet, CA ’14). That’s not a very strong track record. Especially when you compare it to the fact that 11 out of 15 contestants had Talents which were much more “Entertaining” than “Classical”. Doesn’t mean you can’t win with a classical talent… its just means the majority of ladies who finish in the Top 5 have “Entertaining” talents. The numbers prove it.

CALM DOWN – STOP FREAKING OUT!

When it comes to your Talent presentation, nobody said you have to choose between “Entertaining” and “Classical”. As a matter of fact, the ladies who are able to make their “classical” talents cross over into “entertaining” are actually at a distinct advantage over those who have pure entertainment value alone! Unfortunately, far too often we see too many talents that are “classical” without being “entertaining”. Miss America used to crown those kinds of girls. But unless we see a judges panel that’s stacked with those kinds of personalities – I don’t see it happening in the future. You can be Entertaining and not Classical… You can be Entertaining AND Classical… But you can’t be Classical without being Entertaining. That’s simply not gonna get the job done anymore.

BUT THIS SUCKS! PURE TALENT SHOULD BE REWARDED!

LOL! Yes – we hear you loud and clear! But the truth is, we’re not here to debate whether this is the way it SHOULD BE at Miss America or not… We’re simply telling you, this is how we currently see it NOW at Miss America. And if you wanna win, you gotta know what kind of talent Miss America is interested in crowning. You can’t walk into a Pie Tasting Contest with your uber-delicious Cheesecake and be mad because you lost. You have to know what you’re getting into – and ‘play by the rules’ as best as you can. Even if it sucks.

OK – I GET IT… BUT HOW WILL THIS PLAY OUT?

Well – honestly… We wouldn’t be surprised if a couple of things happened within the next 5 years… It’s not at all outside the realm of possibility to see Miss America crown a baton twirler, a flute player, or a speed painter – so long as their presentation was entertaining! We also wouldn’t be surprised if we learned that Miss America is re-naming this portion of the competition. After all – it’s no longer the “Swimsuit Competition”, it’s the “Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit Competition”. And, it’s no longer “Evening Gown” – it’s officially “Evening Wear” (because you could wear pants if you really wanted to do so). That’s why it wouldn’t shock this Junkie at all to learn that the “Talent Competition” is now the “Talent and Entertainment Competition” or something similar. That’s how ingrained I think this new direction truly is.

SO, WHAT THE HECK DO I DO NOW?

First of all, if you’re classically trained and that’s really what you do best, DON’T CHANGE your talent! Nobody’s saying you can’t win – we’re simply saying you can no longer rely on your technical ability alone. “Impressing” your audience isn’t the goal… “Connecting” with them, is. On the other hand, if you’re not classically trained and have always wondered if your talent could make it to the Miss America stage, NOW IS THE TIME to think outside the box and increase your entertainment value! Find the “fun person” in your drama department, music department, dance department, etc – and work with them on ways to make your talent presentation more entertaining. Or, try something new! Once upon a time, nobody thought a Tahitian Dancer, or a Marimba player, or a Hula dancer or a girl who played the cups would ever win Miss America… They were wrong! This could be the year you put your talent on the map because of its incredible entertainment value. Figure out what the audience likes and lean into it!

PS – TALENT IS STILL WORTH 35%

That means, your talent, whether extremely entertaining or not, is not the ‘end all be all’ of the competition. If you spend all your time perfecting your talent to epic levels of entertainment, but you have no substance in your interview and you’re out of shape, I’m sorry, but you lose. You still need to be well-rounded in all areas of competition… Not just talent! Don’t forget that!

So there you have it! Have we lost the battle for Talent at Miss America?

Nope. It’s just being defined differently now.

It’s Talent PLUS Entertainment that wins today. And fair warning – Better get some now – or be left behind.

Hey Miss America! Who’s “Driving the Bus” here, Anyway???

When they say “all press is good press, even when it’s bad press”… I don’t think anyone envisioned we’d be making our way through this kind of start to Miss America 2015’s reign.

Although the original ‘cups controversy’ seems to have faded to the background, multiple new “topics” have arisen in its place. First, it was Kira’s internship at Planned Parenthood… then John Oliver’s expose that Miss America doesn’t actually give away 45 million dollars in scholarships… then Kate Shindle’s commentary about the broadcast itself… and of course, the revelation that Kira was dismissed from her sorority at Hofstra because of hazing allegations. Good Gollie Miss Mollie… Kinda makes you miss the good old days when we were just crowning the wrong winners, doesn’t it?!!! LOL! 🙂

Well – Never Fear! Junkies are here to help you sort it all out! In fact, we’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to read between the lines and see through the fluff in order to determine who the heck is “Driving the Bus” at the Miss America Organization…

As we started analyzing all of this, one thing kept sticking out to us… Over and over again, we keep hearing the phrase “little girls”…

Nina always said she was excited that “little girls” could now look at her and see themselves becoming Miss America because of her skin color. Kira wants to relate to “little girls” via the cups and tell “little girls” it’s OK to make mistakes.

So – Junkies have to ask… Since when do the opinions of “little girls” drive the daily decisions of the Miss America organization?

In order to answer that question, we think it’s important to go back to the beginning and give you a little perspective.

History Lesson:

For umpteen years, advertisers were raving about the coveted “Baby Boomer” demographic. Brands and businesses did everything they could to market to Baby Boomers because they had sheer numbers worthy of making an impact – let alone unprecedented amounts of disposable dollars! If Boomers bought your product or displayed a positive association to your brand, your life was good.

But as Boomers grew older, things began to change. Advertisers discovered you couldn’t promote products/brands to Gen X, Gen Y, and Millennials the way you did Boomers. Why? Not necessarily because of how each successive generation responded, but because of how the world according to Gen X, Gen Y and Millennials, changed.

Here’s an example. Back in the early 80’s – If you didn’t purchase a Cabbage Patch Kid for your child, you were basically the worst mom in history, right? Why? Because marketers TOLD MOMS what their little girls wanted under the Christmas tree. Yes – kids still circled their favorite toys in the annual JC Penny’s catalog – but it was still the advertisers who TOLD MOMS what their kids needed on Christmas morning. Year after year, that advertising strategy continued… Advertisers told moms what was “cool” and then moms told their children what was “cool” – based on the information they received from marketers.

Fast forward to today’s world of texting, smart phones, social media and the Disney Channel.

Guess what? Advertisers no longer bother marketing to parents, because they can go straight to the kids! Originally, this was seen as a pretty risky move because after all, parents still controlled the purse strings in the household. However, that’s when an unprecedented and unexpected shift took place. When advertisers stopped telling moms what to buy and started telling kids what to buy, moms no longer had the same level of influence over their children. Instead, children began influencing their parent’s perceptions of a brand – and the moms accepted it.

Super savvy marketers know this and are clamoring to reach younger and younger demographics any way they can – because they have the access (social media) and the ear (smart phones) of the newest, most influential person in the family… A teenage girl.

So how does this relate to Miss America you ask? Here’s how….

In decades gone by, families could sit around the television and engage in a bit of nostalgia regarding Miss America (with Mama telling her daughter how she remembered watching Miss America with Grandma when she was a little girl…). Back then, mom could easily influence her daughter by talking about the attributes she found appealing regarding each contestant – including her talent, her beauty, her clothing choices, and her poise.

But today, IF the family sits down to watch another reality show, any girl who’s 12-16 is texting her friends and checking twitter and snapchat before solidifying her own opinion about a contestant… AND IN MANY CASES, she’s going to be the one TELLING HER MOM who she should like and why. The “buying decisions” are now influenced by the girls of the household and mom accepts it.

I realize this isn’t the case with each and every household in America… But advertising budgets don’t lie. More often than not, when it comes to products that need early branding, companies are spending billions of dollars to ensure they reach “little girls”.

Which explains why Miss America placed such a heavy emphasis on social media this year. It also explains why they crowned an extremely articulate girl with a non-traditional talent. Further, it explains why the narrative remains about “little girls” instead of the people who are in the trenches – or even the contestants themselves.

If little girls don’t care, Miss America no longer cares.

In our opinion, this is the new direction of Miss America. MAO is bypassing mama and marketing directly to a new generation of contestants. These girls have grown up watching shows where we text in our vote for the winner, throw people off the island, and find your husband by going on ‘group dates’ via national television! “Little girls” are now the coveted demographic – and it’s important that Miss America be seen in a positive light to them.

Truth is, if Miss America can capitalize on that demographic – they will gain a positive brand image and sponsorship dollars galore! Seriously – we’re talking BIG, BIG money!!! Therefore, it’s no longer about the girl with the best talent or the prettiest girl in the room or even the girl with the best talking points… It’s about the girl who can connect with the most coveted audience on the planet; 12-16 year old girls.

So… Where does that leave Junkies like us?

Well… If “little girls” are now “Driving the Bus” – Ideally, it will allow us to embrace a new generation of contestants who should have a positive image of Miss America. In theory, that means each new winner we crown, and the organization as a whole, will become more and more relevant in today’s bubble-gum, pop-culture society.

Or will she?

Junkies know that advertising actions always have consequences. And by promoting the image that “Anyone can be Miss America” – the same way that anyone can become a YouTube sensation – Miss America is falling into the television trap of more salaciousness, less intelligence.

In short, Miss America becomes nothing more than another name on the rotating carousel of reality stars. She’s no longer an ideal to aspire towards – she’s just the Hollywood flavor of the month.

The truth is, we could be wrong. This could all be a misguided theory that has nothing to do with the direction of Miss America and we just wasted a couple of hours of our life writing this post.

Trouble is – I have a nagging suspicion that we’re right.

Miss America is in a dog fight for dollars – the dollars that are controlled by the actions of little girls.

And if “little girls” are driving the direction of Miss America, something tells me we’re in for a mighty bumpy ride…

KIRA KAZANTSEV is the NEW MISS AMERICA!!!

O – M – FREAKING – G!!! Junkies have a ZILLION things going through our minds right now… it’s been all of 45 minutes since Miss America 2015 was crowned and I have much to say! You might want to make sure you have enough time to read this before you get started!!!

FIRST – Junkies wanna offer a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Kira… As we all know, earning the title of Miss America isn’t easy – and it’s a total crap-shoot (again – we use that term affectionately). You’ve got to get 7 different people (the judges) to love you all at the same time – and Kira did just that!

We realize many of you have questions regarding how/why she won… So – Just for fun, we thought we’d go back and give you a condensed version of the blog we wrote when the judges were originally announced! These 5 points were the factors we told you would play a significant role in who would become the next Miss America – according to the type of people we thought the judges were…

1. Marketing/Social Media Gurus – Do you know who started the whole “take a selfie while sleeping with your crown on” trend this year? Miss New York. Do you know who has 10,000 Instagram followers? Miss New York. Do you know who has 53,500 Twitter Followers? Miss New York. The girl knows how to get people’s attention via social media – no question about it.

2. Substance Over Style – Lots of people think Kira didn’t answer her final question… But here’s how I interpreted the question… Paraphrasing… “What issue should the 20 women in the Senate take the lead on?” Kira said, again – I’m paraphrasing – “I think the issue they should take up is combating sexual assault in the military. Women deserve to feel safe.” That’s such an open-ended question that many girls would’ve stumbled. You could’ve gone in a million different directions – but Kira (smartly) chose to relate her answer back to her platform and her passion.

3. Street Smart/Multi-Faceted – Kira is multi-faceted to the core. Her family immigrated from Russia, she was in an abusive relationship, her mother has sewn a large portion of her Miss America clothing/appearance wardrobe (including her on-stage question dress), she was a triple major at Hofstra University (political science, global studies and geography), she speaks Spanish and Russian fluently, she’s a former Nike sponsored golfer, a food blogger and she’s already been accepted to Law School at Notre Dame. NOT A ONE-TRICK PONY!!! I expect we’ll hear her speak on a variety of topics throughout her year – she won’t be repeating the same talking points in every interview. 🙂

4. Fitness – To me, the girl looks like like the most fit Miss America we’ve had in SEVERAL YEARS!!! Can’t argue with her figure!

5. Entertainment Trumps Talent – Ok… Obviously, this point has ruffled a few feathers… So, let’s start by being honest. The girl sang a Top 40 song while sitting on the ground, criss-cross applesauce, and played ‘the cup’.

You may think it’s hokey – and you may think it’s not a ‘trained talent’ – but you need to know that Anna Kendrick’s ‘cup song’ has 155 MILLION views on Vevo!!! Little girls across America think the cup song is fun and adorable! That makes Kira extremely relateable to them – rather than Miss America’s previous reputation of being stuffy and aloof.

In addition – WE TOLD YOU that the best talent was not going to win this year… Instead – these judges favored Entertaining Talents. And if you’re a classically trained vocalist, you probably weren’t super entertained by Miss New York, but you know what… a lot of people were. Especially, a lot of young people. And if you want Miss America to become a national brand, she needs to be appealing to young girls. And for the record, I was entertained. 🙂 She made me smile… and I was happy at the end of her performance. 🙂

Moving beyond those 5 points… We also need to explain how the judging works…

Here’s the deal… Once you have a Top 15, you use the girls’ composite score from the Prelims (worth 30%) plus the next phase of competition. So – even if you have the best swimsuit of the night, if your composite score barely got you into the Top 15, you don’t necessarily advance. That’s how it works all night – UNTIL you get to the Top 5.

After all the ladies in the Top 5 have answered their final question, the scores are thrown out. They don’t matter at all. Instead – each of the judges is given a “final ballot”. On that final ballot, each judge ranks who he/she would like to see as the Winner, 1st runner up, 2nd runner up, etc. The girl who was in 5th place (but made it into the Top 5) can be named the winner if enough judges list her as the winner on the final ballot.

So here’s what that means… Once you’re in the Top 5, the judges no longer care about your talent. They no longer care about your size 2 or your size 8 figure. They no longer care about your Tony Bowls evening gown. The only thing they care about is – who is the most articulate contestant under pressure? Who’s the girl they fell in love with during the interview? That’s who usually wins the pageant.

In summary – that’s how Miss New York won (again) 🙂 Plus, I gotta be honest… I feel like Kira isn’t anything like Nina or Mallory… and if she was from a different state, she might be getting a bit more support! She is sophisticated and approachable. She is warm and natural. She was probably completely relaxed, having the time of her life this week, because never in a million years did she think they’d give it to NY 3 times in a row!!! Although Junkies loved Arkansas and Virginia – I really think the judges got this one right.

AND NOW – on to some other awards given away last night!

Miss Congeniality and the Judges’ Save – NORTH DAKOTA

STEM Scholarships (worth $5000 each!) – NEW MEXICO, VERMONT, OHIO, MASSACHUSETTS and GEORGIA

Non-Finalist Interview – LOUISIANA

Non-Finalist Talent – PENNSYLVANIA, NORTH CAROLINA, INDIANA, WEST VIRGINIA and NEVADA

Junkies go 12 for 16 to start… And we actually had 6 of the Top 10 picked, but only picked 1 of the final 5. Again, considering all of our research was done online this year, we’re pretty darn happy with everything except our Final 5 picks. Something to work on for next year… 🙂

PS – THANKS FOR SWARMING THE NEW WEBSITE! It actually froze because so many people were trying to access it at the same time!!! YAY!!! 🙂

Finally – There’s hardly ever a year when EVERYONE thinks the right girl won Miss America. There’s always going to be some detractors – I get that. But you gotta remember… Junkies started this whole movement because we were frustrated by all the negativity that existed in the online pageant world – and wanted to bring a “more positive tone” to online pageant commentary. Everyone’s welcome to have an opinion, but message boards and other online outlets are already full of rude and disparaging comments against contestants – Sometimes it’s downright hateful! At the end of the day, if you’re a Junkie and you feel the need to make ugly comments about any winner (your state or Miss America), then I have not done my job. I will keep going and do my best to remind everyone what the Junkies stand for. You don’t have to agree – but we’re not here to contribute to the problem! We’re here to make an impact in a positive direction.

And there you have it! Don’t write off Kira just yet! I have a feeling she’s going to surprise a lot of people during her reign and be a wonderful ambassador for the Miss America program! In the meantime, set your DVR’s to all the morning talk shows and take another look! I for one, look forward to watching Kira Kazantsev over the next 12 months… She’s poised to be one of my favorite New Yorker’s to date! 🙂

FINAL PREDICTIONS for MISS AMERICA 2015!!!

THE DAY HAS COME!!!! OH MY GOODNESS – IT’S SOOOOOOOOO EXCITING!!!!

Tonight we crown a new Miss America – the equivalent of a Pageant Girl’s Christmas Morning!!!

Even though The Junkies weren’t in Atlantic City this year, I must say, it’s been great fun watching from afar! In some ways, it’s a little more relaxing – it’s so hard to blog when all you want to do is meet fellow Junkies and run around on the beach! Seriously – if you’ve never seen Miss America live in person, Junkies HIGHLY RECOMMEND you attend! Start saving your pennies, tell your family that’s what you want for your birthday, and make plans to go! It’s everything you love about your state pageant week, times 1000! You’ll never, ever regret it!!! 🙂

Ok – for all our new Junkies, here’s the way the pageant will breakdown tonight!

– After the “Parade of States” and the introduction of Nina Davuluri, we’ll find out who is named “America’s Choice”. It’s possible the state chosen is also one of the judges favorites – but America’s Choice is the lady who finished with the most votes.

– Then, the judges will be announced…

– Next, the ladies with the Top 15 cumulative scores will be named the Top 15. All 16 ladies will then compete in Swimsuit.

– Although Miss America usually has a few tricks up their sleeve regarding the ‘elimination rounds’ – here’s what’s happened in years past… The 16 contestants will be narrowed to 12 – and those 12 ladies will compete in evening gown. Again – something may be different from here forward – based on whatever Miss America decides to do this year.

– Then 12 contestants in Evening Gown become 10 contestants in Talent (two girls are left sitting on the chairs with Chris Harrison).

– After Talent, the Top 10 are narrowed down to the Top 5. The Top 5 then answer the ever-popular “On-Stage Question” and the judges rank each of the Top 5 according to their personal preferences.

– Nina takes her “Final Walk” – and Chris Harrison will announce the runners up and our new Miss America!!!

However – BEFORE THE SHOW STARTS – Make sure you’re tuned into the Miss America Pre-Show! This year, they’re actually going to show us live shots of back-stage where the girls are getting ready for the big show – AND there’s bound to be some other hilarious things take place! Junkies aren’t 100% sure, but we think this is where the “Hot Pageant Dads” will be featured – You won’t want to miss Dena Blizzard (former Miss New Jersey, comedian and hostess) in this pre-show event! THAT’S when the real show begins!!! 🙂

Also – be sure you’re following your favorite contestants on Instagram… Miss America has alluded to the fact that there will be a ‘surprise’ during the telecast tonight that’s announced on Instagram! Wonder what it could be???

OK! Before we get to our picks – Here’s one final reminder for everyone…

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times… THIS YEAR IS SUPER-CRAZY-COMPETITIVE and under other normal circumstances, lots of girls who won’t make the cut tonight, might’ve made it during a different year (without this much competition). We’ve agonized over our list… It’s really hard to choose… but that’s why we play the game! Don’t forget, just because we don’t choose your girl, it doesn’t mean she isn’t smart enough, it doesn’t mean she isn’t talented enough, it doesn’t mean she isn’t pretty enough! It just means Junkies aren’t perfect 🙂 Our goal is that each and every woman competing feels encouraged by our posts – Which is why we love this saying…

If we pick your state tonight – We hope she proves us right!
And if we don’t pick your state tonight – We hope she proves us wrong!

And with that! Here’s our picks for MISS AMERICA 2015!!!

I honestly feel like any of these 5 girls could win the crown tonight – and would make a WONDERFUL Miss America! In fact, I’m trying to picture each of them in that moment of ‘shock and awe’ when the winner’s name is announced and she can’t hardly believe it! Truthfully – I have no idea which of these 5 girls is going to win tonight… So, in a strange twist… I’m not going to predict who will win Miss America 2015… Instead, I’m going to predict the 1st Runner Up 🙂

THURSDAY NIGHT PRELIM WINNERS

WELCOME BACK JUNKIES!!!

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to last night’s winners – AMANDA SMITH from PENNSYLVANIA in Talent and JADE KENNY from MARYLAND in Swimsuit!!! Aren’t they lovely???

Amanda Smith just has this perfect quality to her voice… She’s been super-successful at the Carnegie Mellon School of Music, a highly acclaimed fine arts program in Pittsburgh, PA. We just love it when ‘natural talent’ like hers hits the stage and comes home with the win! CONGRATS AMANDA!

Jade Kenny was the very first contestant to compete in Swimsuit last night – and obviously, the judges decided they didn’t like anything else better than her! She’s also the lone contestant the Junkies didn’t pick this year – which goes to show, your fate is ALWAYS in your own hands, not ours 🙂 CONGRATS JADE!!!

And JUST LIKE THAT – the Preliminary competition for Miss America 2015 is complete!!! Here’s a full list of your winners this week!

BIG CONGRATS to all the ladies in the competition this year! After 2 weeks together and so little sleep (not to mention emotional stress and lack of chocolate) – I’m sure the majority of our contestants woke up feeling relaxed and happy that the prelims are over! For them, the next 2 days – are all about the FUN!!! 🙂

There’s a Big “Miracle Mile” event going on tonight in Atlantic City… And of course, THE SHOW US YOUR SHOES PARADE on Saturday Night!!! No word yet on whether or not the Parade will be televised… We’ll do our best to keep you posted!

In the meantime… I hope you’re making your selections for the Top 16 (Top 15 plus America’s Choice)!!! The Junkies made our first list last night… Although we must say, we started with 23 girls and had to whittle it down to 16 – WHICH WAS INSANE!!! Usually, we have around 18-19 girls to choose from, but I’m telling you, this year is CRAZY COMPETITIVE and this thing could go in a million different directions!

So – here’s the deal…

YES – We will be posting our predictions for Top 16, Top 10 and Top 5 (although Miss America tends to throw in ‘twists’ when it comes to the broadcast, so you never know if we’re going to see exactly those breakdowns or not…). That post will come on Sunday – because we need all the help we can get between now and then to decide – LOL! 🙂
