How Predictions Work

Howdy Junkies!

First of all, can I get a big ‘ole WHOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO for MISS AMERICA WEEK!!! It’s Finally Here!!! WE MADE IT!!!

Alright then… Always good to celebrate the arrival of Miss America week! Now – Even though many of you out there are indeed Junkies for life, we usually pick up a couple thousand more fans during pageant week – which means, it’s good to give everyone a reminder of how our predictions work!

Let’s start with the lineup…

Here’s how it works:

Each night, you’ll see your favorite contestant perform at least one area of competition on-stage – And each night, Miss America awards a Preliminary Talent Award and a Preliminary Swimsuit Award to the highest point earners who were on stage during their respective competition nights. That means, after Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we’ll have 3 Preliminary Talent winners and 3 Preliminary Swimsuit winners.

Now, here at Pageant Junkies, this is where the fun begins! We’re going to do our best to pick a Prelim Talent winner and a Prelim Swimsuit winner on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night. And – just to clarify – sometimes people think because we travel to numerous state pageants, we’ve probably seen like, half of these ladies compete before…  Well, that’s NOT TRUE! In fact, I’ve only seen 2 of these ladies actually compete in a pageant. That’s right – TWO! In addition, during the times when we were in Atlantic City during Miss America week, Junkies don’t make predictions after attending open rehearsals…

So… Wanna know how we make our predictions?

Well – If you haven’t seen the video, here’s the long story regarding “how” we come up with our prediction lists… But if you’d prefer the cliff-notes version, here it is.

We research online.
We consider the opinions of others who offer it to us.
And that’s pretty much it.

However, there’s something else you need to know…

We may have our eyes on a few ladies who’ve piqued our interest, but overall, we don’t have a dog in this fight. I’m not here to promote any certain state above another – and I’m not related to anybody competing in Atlantic City. And guess what that means…?

It means – if I don’t choose your daughter/sister/niece/best-friend’s hair-dresser’s, favorite barista’s granddaughter, it doesn’t mean she wasn’t pretty enough… It doesn’t mean she’s not smart enough or she’s not talented enough…. it only means, I’m not perfect (and trust me – because we didn’t make any state predictions this year, I’m pretty sure perfection ain’t gonna happen (lol!).  Therefore, PLEASE don’t take it personally if we don’t list your favorite contestant.  She’s still got as good a chance as anyone to bring home the title – and our predictions have NOTHING to do with the outcome of the competition! ?

Finally, we always do our best to remind Junkies that “predictions” should be – Wait for it… Wait for it…

FUN!!!

If it’s not FUN – then it shouldn’t be DONE! There’s no need to take this whole thing too seriously – Mainly because Miss America is a total crap-shoot (and I mean that term in the kindest way possible). Therefore, we developed our personal phrase that everyone can easily repeat to themselves as they scroll through our pageant predictions…

If we say your name, we hope you prove us right!
And if we don’t say your name, we hope you prove us wrong!

And we mean it!

I’d much prefer each woman to perform at her highest potential than for me to have a perfect pageant prediction track record. Prove me wrong – all day long – and I’ll be high-fiving you and your entourage while singing a song! lol! My goal isn’t to be correct – My goal is to celebrate the incredible achievements of the women in this program – And that’s the truth!

Sooooooooooooooooo – With all that being said, our first predictions will be released the afternoon of September 6th! If you wanna know who we’re picking, then you need to join the Junkie Newsletter by signing up below…

Predictions are Coming!!!

Photo Sy Bean / Seattle Refined

LOL!!! OH – MY – GAWD – What a crazy-freaking-long time it’s been since I’ve even uttered the words, “Miss America Predictions”… Let alone committed to doing them!

For those of you who’re new here, Pageant Junkies was born out of predictions. Here’s the short version of how everything started..

Once upon a time, I decided to wrangle my friends into following the Miss America preliminary competition by trying to predict the winners via email (read the whole story here)… Mind you – These friends WERE NOT pageant people (to put it mildly). These were folks who clearly loved me, because they were graciously tolerating my semi-obsessive attitude towards the upcoming Miss America competition. However, before you knew it, I was calling them my “Miss America Junkies” and the name stuck. We then expanded into all the crazy things you see here… blogs, podcasts, newsletters, and even state predictions.

Except for this year.

Things changed a bit for me personally this year… After taking some time off from my corporate ladder climbing, I decided to get my real estate license, start a new career, and for the first time in 5 years, I did not make any public predictions regarding individual state winners (catch some of our previous predictions here). I also chose not to predict MAOTeen back in July… which left a few people wondering if I was going to turn my back on predicting Miss America this year as well…

Earlier this week, I made the announcement to my most ardent Junkie supporters, that despite the fact that this will be my LEAST researched class in my 12 year history of publicly predicting winners, I WILL be offering a predictions list for Miss America Prelim Winners, Top 15, Top 10 and Top 5.

Call me crazy – But I just can’t stay away.

Photo by Caroline Bray – WYFF.com

And here’s the deal – Look, I get it… I’m certainly not the only person who’s ever made MAO predictions in her life (far from it)! Pageant fans have being doing predictions for DECADES! All I am, is someone who had a grand fascination and appreciation of the Miss America program and wanted to see if I could connect with other people who felt the same way. So, I put my predictions online for the whole world to see.

And boy howdy – Did that ever change things!

Now, Pageant Junkies has swelled to over 22,000 fans – which is absolutely mind-blowing to me! I mean – You have to understand… Before the explosion of social media, there was a time when I wondered if I could find even 100 people out there like me! And now, I’m absolutely tickled by the fact that so many of you are “Hopelessly Addicted” to the Miss America program – and are Junkies for life!

Without getting too cheesy (ok, maybe a little cheesy)… I have met some of the most amazing people who have dedicated a good portion of their own lives, to investing in the improvement of young women across this country through the Miss America program. It’s that dedication – and the ability to look a young woman in the eye and challenge her to be more than she is right now – that keeps me coming back for more.

So – Miss America will host their preliminary competition starting the evening of September 6th… And while I won’t be in Atlantic City this year, I will be making my predictions (and offering some mindless chatter and commentary) through our email newsletter. If you’re not on the list yet – just sign up below and we’ll make sure you’re included!

THE ONLY WAY YOU’LL BE ABLE TO READ OUR PREDICTIONS IS BY JOINING THE EMAIL LIST BELOW- WE WON’T BE POSTING THEM ON THIS BLOG!

And there you have it! I’ll offer a few more posts leading up to the preliminary competition to give you some insights as to why I choose who I choose when it comes time… But between now and then – get ready for the quickest 2.5 weeks of your life! We’ll be crowning a brand new Miss America is just 18 days!!!

And when they put that iconic crown on her head, let’s hope she gives us a great big “you-gotta-be-kidding-me-I-can’t-keep-my-mouth-closed” moment we’ll never, ever forget!!!

If She Can Do It…

Hey Junkies!

Just a quick update… In case you don’t know – I have a new career now… Last fall I worked my tail off studying for the Real Estate exam in order to become a licensed Realtor in the state of Colorado. I passed the test at the end of February, joined a group in mid-March and have been drinking out of a fire-hose ever since!

Back when I was taking online courses and studying in preparation for the real estate exam, I’m slightly embarrassed to say… I had a few meltdowns. In fact, there were many moments when I became so frustrated at trying to learn the material that I wanted to throw my computer out the window. And if I were being totally honest, I’d have to say, there were many moments, on any given week, which essentially adds up to the fact that I FREQUENTLY considered throwing my computer out the window (just fyi, Colorado requires 168 credit hours of prep before you can take the exam. Hence, my “many moments”).

However, when the going got tough, there were a few things that kept me going. The idea that I could give people a smooth real estate transaction, allowing them to own their first home… The idea that I could strategically invest in certain properties and over the long-term, see those properties materialize into strong financial gains… And more.

But if I can truly bare my soul and be frank with you – when the courses became too overwhelming and frustrating, one thought kept me going more than anything else.

“If (name of someone I know in real estate) can do this, then I can do it too.”

Yes, when I wanted to quit, all I had to do was remind myself that I knew people who had passed the real estate exam – and lived to tell about it. If that person could do it, surely I could too.

All of these feelings came rushing back to me this weekend when I witnessed the winner of the Ms. United States Woman Division…

From Sierra Scott’s Facebook page

Now, just fyi – the requirements for competing in Ms. United States Woman include:

  • Currently not married
  • May have been previously married or had a child, or both
  • Ok to have never had a child, or been married
  • Natural born female who is not currently pregnant
  • Ages 30 and older

And for those of you in the DEEP end of the pageant pool – Here’s how the judges decide who the winner is…

  • Personal Interview (3 minutes privately with 5 judges, 1 per table) = 25%
  • Swimsuit and Fitness (one piece or two piece optional) = 25%
  • Evening Wear (displaying poise and grace) = 25%
  • On-Stage Question (not normally about current events) = 25%

OK – So back to my real estate analogy… Here’s the situation… When I saw the winner of the Ms. United States Woman division, I was amazed… The winner, was Sierra Patricia Scott, Miss Kansas, who is 53 years old!!!

Yes, Sierra bested 40 other women in the Ms. Woman division to take home the crown – and the majority of those ladies were closer to their 30’s than they were to their 50’s!

How did she do it? Well – Here’s four things we see…

From Sierra Scott’s Facebook page

She Set a Goal
In an interview with the Wichita Eagle Beacon, Sierra said she decided to compete as a way to better herself and she set a goal to participate in one final pageant before she turned 55 (Sierra was previously named Miss Missouri 1989).

In the same article, Sierra said, “I am better about motivating myself to get in shape and better myself if I have a date to do it by,” she said. “I did it thinking, ‘This is a great way to force me to get caught up on current events. It forces me to get back in shape and forces me to concentrate on all the things I’m supposed to do.”

Perhaps you’ve set a goal of being “Miss State” – But have you set your mind to achieving that goal? Have you written it down? Do you see your goal in front of you through a visual board or through sticky note reminders? If you’re not serious about setting the goal – I’m afraid you’re not serious about achieving it either.

Further, if you’re not committed to each part of the competition (rather than just your favorite parts of the pageant), you’re going to have trouble walking away with the title. Setting a goal means more than “I want this”… It means, “I’m willing to do certain things (and not do other things) so that I can accomplish this goal.” And there’s a big difference between those 2 statements… It takes work to achieve a goal… And you must be willing to put in the work.

From Sierra Scott’s Facebook page

She’s Comfortable With Herself
Sierra wasn’t naïve when she arrived at the Ms. United States pageant… She knew there probably weren’t going to be a whole lot of 53 year old women participating! Which is why she addressed her age up front in a video about her before she ever set foot on the competition stage (and it’s a GREAT video showcasing her personality – check it out here).

Sierra could’ve tried to dismiss her age by saying “it’s only a number” – but she didn’t dismiss it – Instead, she embraced it! Trust me, I’m 100% certain she was able to stand out from the crowd because of how comfortable she was, as a 53 year old pageant contestant. And I’m guessing it may not have been easy getting to the “comfortable” stage of such – but she did the work and owned it!

I see ladies ALL THE TIME who try to run from the things that make them “different” from other contestants. Here’s the deal – what’s different about you, IS WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT! And nobody ever won a pageant by blending in with the wall paper. If you bring something unique to the table, get comfortable with it. Talk about it. Embrace it. And own it.

From Sierra Scott’s Facebook page

She Had a Greater Vision
In the video referenced above, Sierra also talks about being a cancer survivor and how she wanted to advocate for those in similar circumstance. Her platform called, “show your scars” encourages people not to cover up or hide behind the battles they’ve faced – but instead, to “celebrate” them. And proudly display them, rather than hiding them from site.

Further, in an article inside News4Jax.com, Sierra said she also wants to remind people that just because you’re a certain age, it doesn’t mean life is over.

“…If you’ve got a dream to be in a pageant at 53, be in a pageant at 53. If you’ve got a dream to own a company at 53, own a company at 53. It’s not time to quit. It’s time to get started,” Scott said.

The question is, do you have a greater vision beyond winning the crown? And is that vision compelling enough for you to fight for your goal of winning? Ask yourself, does your state even NEED what you have to offer? Or are you just doing this so you can be a role model for someone else?

Hear me out – There’s nothing wrong with being a role model… But that’s not a unique enough reason to choose you. Whoever wins the title WILL be a role model – so take a few moments/hours to try to really understand your personal motivation behind this goal. When you do, you’ll likely find something a bit more compelling as to why you want the job of Miss fill-in-the-blank.

From Sierra Scott’s Facebook page

She Lived Her Life
Sierra hasn’t spent the last several decades of her life “pageanting”. While her video above tells of some incredible opportunities and ‘fun facts’ about her life, she also pursued a career in television broadcasting. Her LinkedIn profile is awash in numerous television positions, including that of co-host, anchor, director, writer and producer. Sierra has also hosted numerous charity events throughout Wichita and continues to serve on boards and organizations that matter to her.

In short – I believe there are several pageant ladies out there who would do themselves a HUGE favor if you took a year or two off from pageantry to simply “live your life.” Upon doing so, you’ll likely discover a passion you never knew you had – and develop a deeper appreciation of the pageant process while you’re watching from the sidelines.

Sierra pictured with her mother – From Sierra Scott’s Facebook page

Now, please don’t get to thinking I’m considering entering a pageant… I mean, KUDOS to Sierra and everyone else who performed at the Ms. United States pageants this weekend, but that’s not the moral of this story…

Instead, the moral of the story is…

If you find yourself frustrated, or ready to throw your pageant career “out the window”… You now have someone you can reference while pulling yourself together and getting back on track…

Maybe you can print a few pictures, re-read these articles, and repeat the following statement to yourself…

“If 53 year old Sierra Scott can do it, surely I can do it too…”

And I bet you can!

Can I Compete at National Sweetheart?

FYI… This post was originally written on June 23, 2016… It has since been updated to reflect new dates and information for this year’s National Sweetheart Pageant in 2017…

Hey Junkies!!!

Miss America in now enforcing a previous rule within their contracts – and specifically names the National Sweetheart pageant – as a pageant that their local titleholders can no longer associate with (or even promote). There’s been LOTS of misconceptions out there about the Miss Sweetheart Pageant – So I’m going to take a moment and explain a few things in this post.

First – Here’s the latest update from the folks in Hoopeston…

Now… If you haven’t read your MAO local contract lately – Here’s what it says regarding the National Sweetheart Pageant…

2.7.3. Other Competitions. If I win, I will continue to hold the title of Miss _______________ until my successor is selected or appointed. I agree that, during my service in that role and until after the scheduled completion of the full term of the position of Miss _______________ for which I was selected, I will not associate in any way with, promote, perform, judge or become a contestant or participant in any other regional, national or international competition or preliminary competition of a similar nature to the National Finals, including but not limited to the National Sweetheart Pageant/Competition in Hoopeston, Illinois. I also represent that I am not a contestant, participant or titleholder in any other regional, national or international competition or local or state preliminary competition of a similar nature to the National Finals.

Therefore, when I put these 2 things together, here are a couple of scenarios in which YOU CAN participate in the National Sweetheart Pageant…

YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR SWEETHEART IF…

– You aren’t holding a local title as of August 30th. Maybe you did hold a title this year – but you’ll be passing on your local crown between now and August 30th. If so, you can go to Sweetheart.

– You come from a state where you didn’t “win” a local title in a local pageant. Instead, you were given a local title in order to compete at your state (several states do this RI, CO, WY, etc…). If you come from a state where you didn’t “win” a local pageant against other ladies – you’re fine to go to Sweetheart.

– If you won a “sweeps” title to get to your state pageant, and you’re not required to hold that title, or crown someone else at next year’s sweeps pageant, then you’re fine to go to Sweetheart.

– If you’ve previously been a local titleholder – But you ‘sat out’ this year. Maybe you even plan to enter a local pageant and go back to your state in 2018.  As long as you don’t win a local title by August 30th, you can go to Sweetheart.

– If you’ve aged out of the Miss America system and are still under the age of 26, and always heard great things about the National Sweetheart pageant, you can go to Sweetheart (as long as you don’t currently hold a local title).

– If your local title will not be crowning another titleholder this year (I’m Miss Mason Dixon line, but my director is no longer volunteering and nobody will be continuing the pageant), then you’re fine to go to Sweetheart.

– If you’ve already attended Sweetheart, but you’re still under the age limit of 26, AND you weren’t a contestant last year (2016), you can go back to Sweetheart again!

– If crowning your successor is not important to you (I’m not necessarily recommending this – I’m just saying it’s an option), you can relinquish the local title you hold right now, and go to Sweetheart.

From National Sweetheart Facebook page
From National Sweetheart Facebook page

And there you have it!

There may be additional scenarios where you can go to Sweetheart (I’m not saying these are the only situations) – but these are a few ways we came up with in order to get you thinking. If you have additional questions, contact the National Sweetheart Pageant ASAP! The deadline for submitting your application is coming up quickly! The deadline is July 3rd – Which is right around the corner!

Once again, here are the details…

Application/Paperwork Deadline = July 3rd

Arrival = August 30th

Prelims = September 2nd

Finals = September 3rd

If you have questions – Go to hoopestonjaycees.org. ASAP.

For the record, I was in Hoopeston last year at the 2016 National Sweetheart Pageant. It was an incredible experience to be back at Sweetheart after more than 20 years away! If you’d like to read about the reasons why I wanted to go back – check this out. Perhaps it will help you decide if applying to Sweetheart is right for you.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again –

For me personally, NOTHING brought me closer to my love for the Miss America Organization, than my experience at the National Sweetheart Pageant.

If you can go – I highly encourage you to invest in your own future.

Sweetcorn and Sweethearts 2016

Hey Junkies!

So – Couple things…

First, I’m going to launch a Miss America mini-series of sorts, running Saturday, Sunday and Monday… We’re going to talk about a few “important topics” leading up to the first prelim night for Miss America 2017 – So stay tuned… You won’t want to miss it!

As for TODAY, well – I’m traveling to the National Sweetheart Pageant in Hoopeston, Illinois! WHOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

14079516_10154437185737433_6291478802325897196_n

So – Quick recap for everyone who’s new to the Junkie Nation… The National Sweetheart Pageant (NSP) has been around for 73 years – and has been known to be a pretty incredible “stop” in many a pageant girl’s journey (after all, it’s been happening for 73 years!). Until recently, the 1st Runner Up from each state pageant was invited to attend the NSP, with the chance to get to know other young women from across the country who also finished half a heart-beat away from going to Miss America. If the 1st Runner Up couldn’t attend, the 2nd Runner Up was invited and so on down the line, until someone said, “I’ll go!”

Things are a little different this year… Miss America recently placed a line in their contracts stating that anyone who currently holds a local title, is not allowed to participate in other pageant systems, including the National Sweetheart Pageant. Therefore, the NSP decided to host an “open” pageant this year – Where any young woman who applied could be considered, and if there were multiple ladies from the same state who wanted to attend, a committee decided which young woman would be given the chance.

So – With that in mind, Sweetheart didn’t know exactly how things were going to shape up this year… But the great news is, the NSP has an amazing reputation for impacting young women in a positive way. Including me…

-2

I had just turned 21 a few weeks before I finished my first trip to Miss Kansas – placing as the 2nd Runner Up. Our 1st Runner Up declined the opportunity to attend Sweetheart, which meant I received a phone call from our Executive Director, offering me the chance to attend.

To be honest, I didn’t even know what the National Sweetheart Pageant was… But when he explained the opportunity, I immediately jumped on it! I can’t tell you how excited I was just thinking about the chance to get to know young women from across the nation and see what we had in common!

high-school-nickname-cornjerkers

When I arrived in the land of the Corn-Jerkers (the high school mascot), I was immediately at ease. For several ladies in our class that year, they hadn’t seen anything like Hoopeston – But I had! You see, I grew up in a town called Long Island, Kansas – Population 150. And for me, attending the NSP was like competing in a pageant in my hometown. 🙂

I loved getting to know the other contestants (although, I realized I was a bit younger than most), I thoroughly enjoyed how the entire community seemed to rally around the pageant, and I was BLOWN AWAY by the talent and the caliber of the women who were there.

I can still remember preparing for my interview with the judges… All of us in the competition group were in a room, there were newspapers everywhere, girls were looking at notes, and everyone was pacing back and forth looking at the floor, trying to concentrate. I stood up (mainly so I wouldn’t wrinkle my suit), and realized I should be doing the same thing – But instead, I started smiling and laughing to myself. Why? I was SOOO RELAXED. This was literally like I was competing in a pageant that was being held in my own backyard – And I KNEW how to walk into an interview room in my backyard!

KS, HI, ME, OH, PA, AZ, WI
KS, HI, ME, OH, PA, AZ, WI

Turns out, being relaxed was an awesome strategy! I won the Interview Award for my prelim group – But I didn’t make the Top 10. And when they were announcing the Top 10, I had a feeling I wasn’t in the mix… So, the other ladies and I went to the backstage and ate cheeseburgers and french fries while the rest of the pageant took place! It was hilarious – And another memory I have emblazoned on my mind.

Although I would’ve loved to have made the Top 10, I walked away from my Sweetheart experience completely happy! I tried to stay in touch with a few ladies through snail mail after NSP was over, but college life means too many addresses, and no cell phones meant losing track of people when you cancelled your land line. In fact, it wasn’t until I sat down to watch the parade of states at Miss America 1996, that I even knew which of my Sweetheart sisters had won their respective state titles!

wpid-2012-06-04_14-27-33_269

Other than my interview, one of the clearest memories I have is from the National Sweetheart parade. That’s because… When people saw me in the back of that convertible (in my ruby red slippers, mind you), they actually yelled out, “Hi Miss Kansas!!!!”

Now, for someone who had fallen short – and didn’t win the title of Miss Kansas (and never did) – To hear a random stranger calling me Miss Kansas – believing I was Miss Kansas – was a feeling I will never, ever forget.

I even took my sash and placed it above the doorway inside my room in my apartment at school that year… And every time I walked in and out of that door, I wanted to remember the fact that someone thought of me as Miss Kansas – Because it was the most amazing feeling I’d ever had!

Which is why Sweetheart has been such a special part of so many contestant’s lives for so many years…

Sweetheart believes in the power of positively impacting young women who’ve fallen short of their dream.

Let’s be honest – Nobody’s FIRST choice is to attend NSP. We’d all much rather be walking on the stage at Miss America! But the difficulty and frustration, and even the pain of falling short of a state title, was tempered for those of us who attended Sweetheart. Plus, there was absolutely NO PRESSURE to win NSP – We all knew it didn’t count! In fact, I actually forgot I was even at a pageant until the first night of preliminary competition!

That’s why – despite things which were out of their control – I’m soooooooooo happy the folks in Hoopeston, IL decided to go ahead and host the National Sweetheart Pageant this year. We all know it “won’t be the same” with some ladies who finished as a runner up, and others who didn’t even compete this year – But it doesn’t matter. Because the point of Sweetheart, is still the same.

Make a positive impact on young women who fall short of their goals.

The National Sweetheart Pageant isn’t trying to be Miss America… They know that’s never going to happen. However, they can offer a “Miss America Moment” for many young women who will never have one.

That’s exactly what it was for me – And it’s exactly why I still support it.

So – after 2 decades, I can’t wait to set foot in Hoopeston, IL once again. 🙂 I’m guessing a few things will have changed – But I’m also guessing a few things will be just like I remember them…

And although it may be the 73rd year of the National Sweetheart Pageant – It might also be considered the “First Year of a New Era” for NSP… But as long as the mission to positively impact young women remains, then I wish Sweetheart nothing but the best.

Big Junkie Thanks to EVERYONE involved in the National Sweetheart Pageant – I am thrilled to be coming back – And I expect to give out a whole lot of hugs this weekend!

Oh – and to those of you ladies who are competing at NSP this weekend – BREATHE IT ALL IN!!! I realize the vast majority of you are NOT going to feel like this pageant is taking place in your backyard (lol!) – But it doesn’t mean you won’t remember this weekend for years and years to come. I look forward to hearing your stories, watching you compete, and seeing how Sweetheart impacts your life in the future. 🙂

See you soon, Hoopeston!!!
